We are introducing cash as a payment method for select merchants in Canada starting April 29th. This means that some couriers will be eligible to accept deliveries that require cash payment at drop-off.

Eligible couriers will be auto-enrolled to receive cash trips and don't need to take any action. To opt out of receiving cash trips, simply head to Preferences and disable the Cash Trips option.

What to expect with cash delivery trips in the Driver app

Delivery Request

Before you accept a delivery request, your offer card will display a  “Cash” badge so you know upfront that the delivery will be paid in cash.

Ending the delivery and collecting payment

Once you’ve handed off the order at the drop-off location, tap “Collect Payment” in the app to see the exact payment amount. Continue reading below to learn about different payment scenarios and what actions to take.

⚠️ Important: Never argue with a customer about payment. If there’s an issue, move away from the dropoff location and call support to cancel the delivery. Uber will always make sure that you are paid what you are owed within the Uber Driver app.

Trip Receipts and Earnings Balance

Once a cash delivery trip is completed:

  • The trip receipt will show how much cash you received. This amount will appear as a negative payout since payment was collected directly from the customer.
  • In your Earnings Summary, cash payouts will be listed as negative amounts because you keep the cash. If your balance is negative at any point, it’ll be adjusted with future earnings from digital payments.
  • If you keep a negative balance for a time, your ability to accept cash deliveries may be paused temporarily until you have enough digital payment delivery trips to cover the negative balance from cash deliveries.
  • Any cash tips you receive are, as always, 100% yours to keep.
How to opt out

If you don’t want to accept cash delivery trips, you can opt out anytime in Preferences. All eligible couriers are automatically opted in when the feature launches, but opting out takes just a few taps. You can opt back in whenever you like.

Here are some commonly asked questions about handling cash:
  • Do I need to carry exact change?

You are not required to carry change, although it  can help things go smoothly as having small bills lets you offer the exact amount of change, when requested.

  • Can customers pay tip on cash deliveries?

Yes! Customers can tip in cash. As always, you keep 100% of the tips you make.

  • What should I do if the customer pays more for the order and I do not have exact change?

Customers are instructed to provide exact change for the delivery. However, in the event that a customer offers you more cash than expected, a few scenarios can occur:

  1. The customer intentionally leaves the extra amount as a tip. You may keep the entire amount and deliver the order to the customer.
  2. The customer expects change but you do not have it, deliver food to the customer without taking any cash and contact Support. Uber will always make sure that you are paid what you are owed within the Uber Driver app.
  • What do I do if the customer doesn’t have enough cash to pay for the order?

In this case, the order should not be delivered, but returned to the store. Call Support and they can assist you with the return process. You will receive payment for delivering and returning the order.

  • Are there any extra fees or deductions?

No! There are no additional fees for cash trips. If a customer has a promotion or discount, it won’t affect how much you earn.

  • What do I do if I have questions or need assistance?

At any point during the delivery, you can tap the “Contact Support” button to get help or get answers to any questions you may have.  Remember, you can report any safety incident 24/7 through the app, or by calling the Safety Incident Reporting Line.
