A new Washington state law entitles Transportation Network Company (“TNC”) drivers in Washington to new rights and protections, which are summarized below. A full Notice of Driver Rights is available at the bottom of this page in English, Amharic, Arabic, Dari, French, Oromo, Punjabi, Soninke, Tigrigna, Spanish, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Korean, Russian, Somali, and Vietnamese.
Minimum Trip Compensation: TNC drivers are guaranteed minimum per minute, per mile, and per trip rates.
For trips starting inside the City of Seattle, in 2025 TNC drivers will earn the greater of the following (“Seattle Rates”):
$0.68 per minute + $1.59 per mile OR $5.95 per trip
For trips starting and ending outside the City of Seattle, in 2025 TNC drivers will earn the greater of the following (“Washington Rates”):
$0.39 per minute + $1.34 per mile OR $3.45 per trip
For trips starting outside the City of Seattle but ending in the City of Seattle, in Seattle rates will apply for the portion of the trip that occurred within City limits and Washington Rates will apply to the portion of the trip that occurred outside of City limits.
For trips originating outside of Washington, Washington Rates or Seattle Rates (as applicable) will apply for the portion of the trip that occurred within the state of Washington.
Shared Rides: TNCs must treat shared rides as a single trip that starts when the first passenger enters the vehicle and last passenger exits. Additional passenger pickups/drop offs during the trip are not calculated as separate rides, but are used to determine which minimum rates apply to the trip. TNCs must apply the highest minimum rate applicable during any portion of a shared ride to the entire trip.
Tips: TNC drivers are entitled to 100% of their tips. Tips are in addition to, and may not count toward, the minimum pay rates outlined above.
Deductions: TNC drivers must agree in writing to any deduction (unless required by law or court order).
Per Trip Receipts and Weekly Pay Statements: TNC drivers are entitled to pay information on a per-trip and weekly basis as detailed in the Notice of Driver Rights.
Paid Sick Time: TNC drivers are entitled to earn and use Paid Sick Time. For more information on Uber’s Paid Sick Time policy, click here.
Protection against Retaliation: TNC drivers have the right to be protected from retaliation for exercising in good faith the rights established by the Washington law and as detailed in the Notice of Driver Rights.
Right to Legal Action: TNC drivers have the right to seek legal action or file a complaint with the Washington Department of Labor & Industries as detailed in the Notice of Driver Rights.
