Give thanks – and safe rides

We know Thanksgiving is a great time to celebrate with loved ones. However in Michigan, Thanksgiving is also the second deadliest holiday weekend for traffic crashes, many related to drinking and driving.

This year we’ve teamed up with the Detroit Lions to spread the word on the dangers of drunk driving and encourage revelers to leave the keys at home. By offering a safe and reliable alternative to getting behind the wheel after drinking, ridesharing technology can improve public safety in our communities in ways not possible before. Time and time again we see that when people can press a button and get a ride, they’re more likely to make good decisions at the end of the night — and get home safely.

“The Lions are proud to partner with Uber to promote safe driving this upcoming holiday season. Making sound driving choices after a night of festivities helps not only yourself, but every other person on the road as well. We welcome every opportunity to leverage our platform in an effort to make our region and community safer.”

– Bill Hawker, Vice President of Partnerships, Detroit Lions

We’re proud to team up with the Detroit Lions to offer Uber riders an alternative to drinking and driving this weekend. New Uber riders can use the code GIVINGTHANKS to redeem two free rides.* Riders can redeem by signing up with the code, or entering the code in the app.

Give Thanks

We’re thankful for the riders and drivers that move Michigan every day. It is Thanksgiving week after all—a time to be, well, thankful. That’s why starting this week, we’re making it easier for riders to thank drivers for the things they do –– big and small –– to make their ride memorable. Riders can now leave drivers compliments directly in the app ㄧ say for expertly navigating winding city streets or striking up a conversation that brightened their mood. You can also share a story about a great trip on @Uber_MI’s Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #UberThanks.

Going out on Thanksgiving Eve? We’ve whipped up some pro-tips to make your night easier. Whether you are going out for the night or heading to a Lions game, make the smart choice by riding responsibly.

Pro-Tips for Thanksgiving Eve:

    • Fare Splitting: If you’re sharing your Uber ride with a friend to a Friendsgiving dinner, holiday party, or the airport, it’s easy to split the fare right through the app. Once you’ve requested a ride, tap the arrow icon next to your driver’s info, select “Split Fare”, choose your friends, and tap “Send”.
    • Don’t Forget – Buckle Up: You may not be in the driver’s seat, but that’s no excuse to forget the Golden Rule of car ridership. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seatbelt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries if ever an accident should occur. So fasten that seatbelt.
    • Share Your Trip Details: While en route, you can not only monitor your own trip in your app but also share your trip details with friends and family. Simply tap the “Send Status” button to immediately send your driver’s name, photo, vehicle, and where you are on the map to a friend or family member, so they know when you’ve safely arrived. They don’t even need to download the app to track your trip!
    • Know Your Uber, Avoid Scams: When you request an Uber, you’re given the driver’s name, photo and license plate number in your app. Before you get in the car, check the license plate number and look in the window to make sure the driver matches the photo. When you open the door, ask for the driver’s name. Always remember Uber rides can only be requested through the app, so never accept street hail solicitations from those claiming to be Uber.
    • Be Kind and Respectful: Please treat your driver as you would want to be treated. Be respectful of his or her personal vehicle. Our community guidelines apply to both riders and drivers.
