It’s been hot in DFW for a while, but summer officially kicks off this month, and it’s time to start filling the schedule with BBQs, picnics, and outdoor concerts. Whether you’re looking for an afternoon of family fun or planning an evening out with adults only, DFW has plenty of activities to keep your weekends interesting.
Things to do around DFW this June
Cut out of work a bit early, and head to the Rustic for live music, yard games, and prizes. Entrance is free as long as you RSVP in advance so you can save your money for an order of cactus fritters and one of the more than 30 local craft beers on draft. The evening’s headlining act is Ryan Cauthen, an up-and-coming country musician who has opened for Willie Nelson and Ryan Bingham. Don’t miss the chance to see him in this intimate venue.
When: June 2, 3pm – 11pm
Where: The Rustic, 3656 Howell Street, Dallas
If you’re looking for a way to make this summer more meaningful, check out Voly in the Park. This annual volunteerism festival connects community-minded citizens with the many North Texas charities in need of volunteers. The event will feature 65 nonprofits as well as live entertainment and interactive volunteer projects. Whether your passion is education or environmentalism, hunger relief or healthcare, the arts or animals, you are sure to find a cause that speaks to you.
When: June 3, 12pm – 4pm
Where: Klyde Warren Park, 2012 Woodall Rodgers Freeway, Dallas
Looking for something the whole family can enjoy? Kids of all ages will have a blast at the Uptown Family Fest in the West Village. Little ones will love the petting zoo, face painting, and balloon artist, while the live music and photo booth should keep the teens and tweens happy. Best of all, the whole thing is free so Mom and Dad will be smiling too.
When: June 3, 10am – 1pm
Where: 3699 McKinney Avenue, Dallas
Head to Frisco Commons Park to get your summer vacation off to a great start while supporting a worthy cause. For the fourth year in a row, Crosswalk Fellowship is hosting their Summer Kickoff in support of the Frisco Family Service Food Pantry. Bring a nonperishable food item to donate, and get free admission to enjoy the games, bounce house, magic show, and giveaways. The first 300 families will get a free goodie bag, so get there early.
When: June 4, 5pm – 8pm
Where: Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road, Frisco
Nothing says summer like a BBQ, and what better way to get the season started than with an epic cook-off? You’ll be the beneficiary as 40 teams compete to see whose brisket is best and whose ribs reign supreme. Your ticket entitles you to all the BBQ you can sample and craft beer to wash it all down. The meat is the main attraction, but the event also includes live music, a car show, and a kids zone.
When: June 9 – 11, 5-9pm
Where: Addison Circle Park, 4970 Addison Circle, Addison
Featuring over 250 exhibitors including 60+ restaurants and 20 craft breweries, Taste of Dallas is the city’s largest summertime food festival. New this year is the Live Fire area, which will highlight BBQ, burgers, and beer. Kids ten and under are free, and the Family Fun Zone will feature giant inflatables, cooking demonstrations, interactive games, and character meet and greets (the Minions will be making an appearance). Bring two cans of tuna or chicken to donate to the North Texas Food Bank to receive a $5 refund on your ticket.
When: June 10 – 11
Where: Fair Park, 1121 First Avenue, Dallas
This free monthly event features an outdoor concert followed by a film screening in the garden of the Nasher Sculpture Center. Singer-songwriters Doug Burr and Sarah Jaffe will provide the music this month, and Oscar-winner La La Land will be shown at 9 p.m. Plan ahead and reserve a picnic dinner or take advantage of the ready-made snacks and street tacos provided by Wolfgang Puck Catering.
When: June 16, 6pm – 12am
Where: Nasher Sculpture Center, 2001 Flora Street, Dallas
The final performance in this weekly concert series brings Fleetwood Mac to the Martin Rutchik Concert Stage and Lawn. The incredible musicians who make up this tribute band are dedicated to recreating the sound and atmosphere of a Fleetwood Mac show. Gates open at 6pm, so arrive early to get a good seat and check out the food trucks before the music starts.
When: June 29 at 7:30pm
Where: Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden – 8525 Garland Road, Dallas
Set the tone for summer by filling June with all of the food, fun, music, and culture that DFW has to offer.
