Uber China Partners with China Women’s Development Foundation to Promote Opportunities for Women

March 1st, 2016 – Uber China today launched a strategic partnership with the China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF), a non-profit social welfare organization established by the All-China Women’s Federation, dedicated to improving quality of life and legal rights for women, as well as promoting development opportunities for women. Uber China will work with the CWDF on initiatives that promote empowerment for women, and on programs leveraging the “Internet+” model to support entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women.  Also today, Uber China has committed to creating job opportunities for 600,000 women in China by the end of this year.

In addition to signing a strategic partnership, Uber China and the CWDF also kicked off a new initiative called “Empowering Women: Taking The Wheel – Driver Community Day”. On March 5,  car owners around China will be invited to  to sign up on Uber China’s platform, participate as a driver partner, and donate their fares for the day to the CWDF’s programs across China that support employment opportunities for women. On March 8, International Women’s Day, millions of Uber riders around the country will also be encouraged to contribute to CWDF’s “@FemaleEntrepreneurship Program”, which was launched in 2015 and is dedicated to supporting local entrepreneurship programs for women nationwide. On the day, any time Uber riders across China book a ride on the Uber app, they will be presented with an option to donate directly to the program.

The initiatives announced today are part of Uber’s long-term commitment to empowering women, creating a better work environment for women, and providing more opportunities for flexible employment and improved income levels.

Zhen Liu, Head of Strategy for Uber China, said: “We’re hugely encouraged that Uber’s platform is not only making transportation more convenient and efficient for riders in China but is also creating more job opportunities for women driver partners. More and more women are choosing to partner with Uber because our platform provides flexible working hours, enabling a better work life balance – and at a low initial cost. Our target is to create 600,000 jobs for women in China by the end of this year. Alongside these job opportunities, we’re also excited to support the CWDF’s goals by providing our company’s expertise and resources. This includes providing support in auto financing, driver training, and – as with our March 8th initiative – building support for these programs among the Uber community nationwide. We are also continuing to work on innovations that will ensure women driver partners operate in a safe environment.”

The China Women’s Development Foundation was established by the All-China Women’s Federation, and is the largest non-profit organization in China dedicated to women’s and family issues. All of its initiatives are focused on addressing practical issues affecting women. In recent years, the organization has launched initiatives such as the “Water Cellar for Mothers”, and “Mother Health Express”, aimed at improving living conditions and health for women nationwide.

Qin Guoying, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Women’s Development Foundation, said, “The @FemaleEntrepreneurship Program will create a robust platform to support the growth of job opportunities for women in China. We are pleased to work with Uber China to harness the opportunities of the mobile internet era. Together, we will work to explore new ideas, create new opportunities, and use new tools to enable women to take full advantage of the potential of the sharing economy. We look forward to seeing this partnership create a new and increasingly effective model for collaboration between the private and non-profit sectors.”
