Get a license in Australia

In order to provide passenger transport services in New South Wales you need authorisation from the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS). You'll need to complete the steps outlined below before you can drive using the Uber app.

您需要做什么

  • 1. Provide a NSW Driving Record

If you haven’t already, you’ll need to provide us with a copy of your NSW driving record. You can get this online at the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) website or in person at the nearest Service NSW. Detailed instructions are available in the section below, or follow this link to order your driving record online now.

  • 2. Apply for a Passenger Transport Licence Code

You will be required to get a Passenger Transport Licence Code (PTLC) in order to become a driver-partner with Uber. You can apply for your PTLC at your local Service NSW. Visit the Service NSW website to learn more.

  • 3. Lodge a Background Check

As part of the sign-up process, driver-partners are required to pass a criminal background check through National Crime Check (NCC). This can be done online and is usually processed within 14 days. More information is available in the section below or go directly to lodge now.

导致取消资格的违规行为

Under NSW law, a person cannot be a ridesharing driver in NSW if the person has been found guilty of a ‘disqualifying offence’ - as defined by section 24 of the Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Regulation 2017. Common disqualifying offences include (but are not limited to):

Driving under the influence of alcohol - middle or high range High range speeding (e.g. more than 45km/h over the speed limit) Driving while a licence is suspended or disqualified Racing offences Certain assault or property offences For the full list of disqualifying offences, please see section 24 of the Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Regulation 2017.

Please note:

Some convictions may be ‘spent’ and are no longer considered a ‘disqualifying offence’ due to a certain time period passing (for example, 10 years for most offences) Under section 32 of the Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016, an offence may still qualify as a disqualifying offence even if the court did not record a conviction If you are unsure whether you have a disqualifying offence on your record, please reach out to Uber Support or visit an Uber Greenlight Hub.

The requirements may vary from city to city.

  • As part of the sign-up process, driver-partners are required to pass a criminal background check through the National Crime Check (NCC). This can be done online and is usually processed within 14 days.

You will receive a confirmation email and a copy of your results once your background check has been processed. No action is required from you after lodging - NCC will supply a copy of your results to Uber.

For more information on how to lodge a background check, use the link below.

  • You will be required to get a Passenger Transport Licence Code (PTLC) in order to become a driver-partner with Uber. You can apply for your PTLC at your local Service NSW. Visit the Service NSW website to learn more.

Service NSW will notify Uber when your application has been approved. You do not need to upload your PTLC to your Uber driver profile.

  • Driver-partners must be GST registered and provide an Australian Business Number (ABN) in order to access the Uber app. If you haven’t already, you can register for GST via the Australian Tax Office (ATO) website. Alternatively, you can do this through services like AirTax, which are free of charge.

You can provide your ABN details and confirm that you are registered for GST in the ‘Invoice Settings’ section of your Partner Dashboard. Scroll down to fill in the field marked ‘Australian Business Number (ABN)’, Company/Legal name and confirm that you are registered for GST.

  • In New South Wales, you and Uber have certain legal obligations to ensure that every trip is safe and welcoming. To make sure you are aware of these obligations, you are required to complete driver safety education before you can start using the Uber Driver app. It should take less than 30 minutes to complete. You can complete the driver safety education course via logging into the Uber Driver app/website. The safety education covers important topics such as avoiding discrimination, preventing sexual harassment, assisting riders with disabilities, vehicle maintenance and inspection, making sure you are fit to drive and general road safety.

  • All vehicles must have a 5-Star ANCAP rating or fall under our vehicle exemption policy to qualify for the Uber platform. Vehicles that do not meet our requirements will not be eligible to receive trip requests, and may be deleted from your account.

You can find out whether your vehicle has a 5-Star ANCAP rating at www.ancap.com.au.

For more information on our vehicle safety and exemption policies, use the link below.

载客服务驾照代码 (PTLC)

To comply with new regulations and drive using the Uber driver app, you will be required to get a Passenger Transport Licence Code added to your NSW driver’s licence.

Ten year driver's licence exception

If you have a 10 year driver's licence, you will need to attend a Service NSW to change it to one with a 5 year expiry or less. Once you have a 5 year licence you can apply for a PTLC at Service NSW.

Why this is required

As per the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) website, a PTLC cannot be added to a licence with an expiry date more than 5 years in the future. You can read more about this on the RMS website.

What it will cost

We understand that Service NSW will issue a partial refund for the difference in expiry years remaining on your licence.
