In many markets, you can begin driving with UberX as long as you have a qualifying car and the requisite insurance, and you complete a background screening. You must also have a valid driver’s license, one year of licensed driving experience, and be at least 21 to drive with Uber. But, you typically do not need to obtain a professional license.⁴

For school buses or buses that transport 16 or more passengers, you must have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with passenger (P) and/or school bus (S) endorsements.⁶ ⁷

No. And generally speaking, you don’t need a CDL to drive with UberX. To drive larger commercial vehicles, such as buses or stretch limos, you do need a CDL. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires drivers who transport 16 or more passengers to hold a CDL with a passenger (P) endorsement.⁶

  • $1M liability
  • $1M uninsured/underinsured motorist injury coverage
  • Contingent collision and comprehensive coverage up to actual vehicle cash value (with a $1K deductible)
