Road safety at Uber

As a platform that facilitates movement, we’re committed to being a leader in road safety. Through developing innovative features and initiatives, launching road safety education, and partnering with experts, we use our scale to help improve safety for everyone out on the road.

Road safety education

We provide educational materials and courses developed in partnership with road safety experts such as the Governors Highway Safety Association and the League of American Bicyclists to help keep drivers, delivery people, riders, and others safe while on the road.

RideCheck

Our RideCheck technology can help detect rare events such as unexpected long stops on a trip or possible vehicle crashes. The technology proactively checks in with riders, drivers, and couriers to see if everything is OK, and the app provides tools that they can use to get help if needed.*

Bike lane alerts

Before riders open the door when their dropoff is near a bike lane or along a bike route, in some markets they’ll receive a notification to look for people on bikes and be asked to practice the Dutch Reach.

Driving-hours tool

To help prevent drowsy driving, Uber’s Driver app limits the number of hours drivers and couriers can spend online.

Speed limit alerts

The Driver app displays the live location speed limit and can visually alert drivers if they go above the posted speed limit.

Background checks

Before anyone can drive with Uber, they must provide their driver’s license number and undergo a background screening —including being checked for driving violations and impaired driving—and other safety checks.

Reducing drunk driving

We’re proud that Uber plays a direct role in reducing drunk driving. Independent research shows that Uber reduced drunk driving deaths in the US by 6% in 2019 alone, equating to 214 lives saved. We’re committed to working with cities, advocates, and other partners to end drunk driving.

2-wheel courier safety

To help keep bike couriers safe while riding, Uber offers bike-friendly navigation, access to bike safety gear, and 2-wheel safety education from advocates.

Meet some of our partners

Governors Highway Safety Association

We partner with GHSA on a range of road safety efforts, including occupant protection, bicycle delivery safety, driving safety education, and drunk and drug-impaired driving prevention.

The League of American Bicyclists

Uber partners with the League of American Bicyclists on a range of bicycle safety efforts. Together, we launched Bicycle Friendly Driver education to help drivers on the Uber platform understand how to safely navigate the streets with people biking.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Since 2012, Uber has partnered with MADD to end drunk driving. Together, we’ve launched anti–drunk driving efforts across the country. In 2021, we expanded the partnership to launch a new coalition, Decide to Ride, with Anheuser-Busch.

National Safety Council

As a member of NSC’s Road to Zero Coalition, we partner on numerous road safety efforts, including seat belt and distraction campaigns. We also joined NSC in its call for a national Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic fatalities.
