Building Uber’s Future in France
Uber Air will add a third dimension to the Uber platform using flying vehicles: Aerial ridesharing will use a network of all-electric, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft powered by distributed electric propulsion. Uber Elevate’s Advanced Technologies Center in Paris (ATCP) supports this vision by building artificial intelligence along with optimization and airspace management systems to support Uber Air at scale.
ATCP’s primary goal involves maintaining strong relationships with academic research institutes in Europe while engaging in our own research on several topics relevant for Uber Elevate. The initial focus for ATCP is digital sciences, such as artificial intelligence for decision-making and increased automation, optimization, and the safety of software systems. Safety applies to the aircraft itself, but also to the broader system of urban aviation.
Meet Our Team
- François Sillion
François leads Uber's Advanced Technologies Center in Paris. His research interests lie in Computer graphics, computer vision, and applications of machine learning. Previous to Uber, François has held research positions at Inria, CNRS, Cornell University, M.I.T, Ecole Polytechnique and Microsoft Research, and senior executive positions at Inria. He received Eurographics’ "Outstanding Technical Contribution Award" in 2009.
- Sebastien Mamessier
Sebastien is a Senior Research Engineer, leading the Engineering effort in Paris within Uber ATCP. Before joining Elevate, Sebastien spent 3 years at Uber's self-driving division ATG designing and implementing low-latency autonomy algorithms, as well as 3 years at Airbus prototyping Avionics and HMI concepts. His research interests lie at the intersection of Software Engineering, Safe AI for Aviation, and Ecological Psychology. Sebastien shares his workday between research in robust autonomous vehicles and building a scalable Research Platform for Elevate.
- Youssef Hamadi
Youssef’s research is set at the intersection of Optimization and Artificial Intelligence. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Montpellier, devising new algorithms for Distributed Constraint Solving. In 2013, he defended his Habilitation on the concept of Autonomous Search at the University of Paris Sud. In 2003, he created the Constraint Reasoning Group at Microsoft Research Cambridge, pushing the limits of Parallel Satisfiability and large-scale Optimization, while transferring mathematical modeling and award-winning algorithms into several Microsoft products. In 2006, Youssef started to work on the relationships between Stochastic Optimization and Sustainability, creating jointly with CNRS the first European research project on Optimization for Sustainable Development. He joined Uber Elevate in 2019 to conduct research on Airspace Optimization, Urban Air Mobility infrastructure, Distributed Decision Making and Autonomous aircraft.
- Nancy Bienert
Nancy is a Research Engineer at Uber ATCP. Before joining Uber, she led the Safety Oversight Team for Air Navigation Service Providers at the German National Supervisory Authority (BAF) for 2 years. Nancy completed her Master Thesis about Air Traffic Controllers decision making under uncertainties at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California in 2013 and continued working for the Airspace Operations Laboratory till 2017. Projects were mainly focused on Air Traffic Controller Support Toolsi, and shifted later to UAS Traffic Management (UTM) field studies.
- Nicola Bernini
Nicola is a Senior Autonomy Engineer at ATCP. Before joining Uber, he worked at Ambarella in the autonomous driving research department, conducting research on vision and lidar-based perception and implementing algorithms for autonomous cars and drones on the Ambarella chips. He did his Ph.D. on Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) in the domain of autonomous robotics. He worked with different programming languages and machine learning models, especially deep learning for computer vision.
- Romain Pennec
Romain is a Software Engineer II at Uber ATCP. Before joining Uber he was a DevOps Engineer in the department of Virtual Capability at Goodyear. His background lies at the intersection of aeronautics, mathematics, and computer science. Romain is an Aerospace Engineer from the French Grande Ecole SUPAERO (ISAE) and obtained a double degree with the German Technical University of Munich (TUM). In the Elevate Team at Uber, he is passionate about supporting research activities through modern and scalable software engineering practices.
- Remi Delmas
Rémi’s research is focusing on improving system safety modeling formalisms and analysis to better handle future eVTOL and UAM systems, in leveraging machine learning techniques to improve automatic bug detection in critical software and more generally on bridging safety, design and operational aspects to allow UAM to scale safely. Before joining ATCP he worked as a research scientist at ONERA on formal methods and design optimization for critical embedded systems, and before that at Prover Technology building certifiable model-checking solutions for railway control systems. Rémi obtained his computer science Ph.D. in formal methods from Sup'Aero in 2004, working on formal multi-faceted modeling and verification for modular avionics systems.
- Eric Goubault
Eric Goubault is a scientific advisor at ATCP and is a full-time professor of Computer Science at Ecole Polytechnique. His research interests are validation and verification of software, hybrid systems, and concurrent/distributed systems. He has been successively CNRS researcher at Ecole Normale Supérieure, a senior researcher at the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), founder of the MeASI lab and joint research team with Ecole Polytechnique, professor and head of the Computer Science department at Ecole Polytechnique.
- Morgane Brunel-Renoir
Morgane is the Lab Administrator/Executive Assistant for ATCP. She graduated with a BA in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before joining Uber, Morgane was with Salesforce.
- Maxime Buyse
Maxime is a Junior Research Associate at Uber ATCP. He studied computer science at the graduate level at Ecole Polytechnique. His background is in formal methods and software safety and he joined ATCP to work on model-based safety assessment formalisms for urban air mobility.
- Mehdi Bennaceur
Mehdi is a Junior Research Associate at Uber ATCP. He studied statistics and machine learning at ENSAE and also has a background in quantitative economics. He joined ATCP to work on eVTOL dispatch optimization.
- Arnaud Yoh Massenet
Arnaud is a Junior Research Associate at Uber ATCP. He works on creating Generative Models in the Continual Learning setting. Before this, he studied Computer Science and Machine Learning at McGill, Oxford, and ENS.
- Arthur Gold
Arthur is a Research intern at Uber ATCP. He has just graduated from Supaero and a master in Operational Research at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse. He works on generating a reinforcement learning agent that could find the worst cases for a given controller.
