At Uber, safety is our first priority. That’s why we’ve developed a wide range of proprietary tools and procedures that have raised standards for safety in mobility services, as well as ensuring strict compliance with all applicable legal requirements, before, during, and after a trip, so you can move with confidence, anywhere.
Prior to the trip:
- Licensed drivers: all drivers active on the Uber platform are licensed by Transportation Authorities (IMT) in order to properly transport passengers.
- Document verification: 100% of driver, vehicle, and operator documents submitted go through verification, both upon initial submission, as well as upon each expiry date. All drivers must provide a valid identification document and/or residence permit, a valid driver’s license with at least 3 years of experience, and the TVDE driver certificate emitted by the IMT, which includes the group 2 endorsement, indicating that they are physically and mentally fit to drive types of vehicles that require special care (e.g. ambulances, school transport, child transport, etc.) as well as a photo.
- A clean criminal record at all times: All drivers must submit clean criminal records every 3 months, which are mandatory for accessing the platform.
- Complete and reliable trip information: when requesting a trip, passengers are informed about the make, model, color, and license plate number of the vehicle, as well as the name, photo, and rating of the driver, which can be checked in the App at any time until the trip is completed.
- Guaranteed match between the requested trip and the assigned driver: In addition, users can activate a unique PIN code, assigned in the app to confirm their trip. If you activate this security tool, this PIN ensures that you get into the right car. As a periodic safety mechanism, on some trips, you may be asked for a PIN even if you do not usually use this security tool.
- Phone number anonymization: all calls and text messages exchanged between driver and passenger are anonymous, so no driver can access the user’s phone number.
- Insurance: All TVDE vehicles must have valid insurance for the TVDE activity, including passenger protection users in case of an accident.
- ID-match verification: to ensure that the information provided by drivers and their identity matches, Uber has several processes in place to verify that the documents registered are legitimate and that the person behind the wheel matches the one registered on the platform through regular selfie requests and face recognition. Driver accounts failing to verify such matching can be permanently restricted from accessing the platform.
During the trip:
- Geolocation: Each trip has GPS technology and is tracked from the moment the driver accepts the trip and moves to the passenger pickup location until the drop off of the final destination.
- Trip Status Sharing: Passengers can select up to five favorite contacts with whom to share trip details. The chosen contacts receive an SMS with a link to follow the trip in real-time.
- Emergency button: This feature allows passengers to call the local emergency number directly and receive all the useful information to share with the emergency call service, such as your real-time GPS position, the make and model of the vehicle, and the license plate number.
- RideCheck – trip verification in case of unexpected changes: If a trip suffers a significant change such as unexpected immobilization or a significant deviation, Uber notifies the passenger to verify that the trip is proceeding as planned.
- Driving hour limits: To help make roads safer, drivers cannot accept/perform trips after they reach the legal limit of consecutive driving hours.
- Speed Limit Alerts: The Speed Limit Alerts feature sends visual reminders to help drivers maintain a safe speed.
After the trip:
- Incident reporting tools: the user support feature is available on the platform after each trip, allowing immediate reporting of any problem, including incidents related to safety, gender or sexual assault, and discrimination, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In order to go to your “Account” area on the bottom right of the home screen, “Trips”, select the trip in which the incident occurred, slide down to the “Help” section, and select “Report Safety Issue”.
- Protection against retaliation: users’ data such as name, phone number or address are always protected so that they can report incidents without fear of retaliation.
- Specialized security teams based in Portugal: dedicated security teams will support any investigation by contacting users and taking the necessary actions, including assisting in filing complaints with the authorities.
- Preventive account suspension: in the event of a safety incident, the accounts involved are immediately suspended as a preventive safety measure.
- Permanent deactivations: In case of a safety incident, the case is reviewed by the internal security team, which, after phone contact with all parties involved, can lead to the permanent deactivation of an account
- Team of former law enforcement officers collaborating with police and judicial authorities at all times, including in emergency cases: in case of an incident, members of our Public Safety Response team share all information necessary for a judicial investigation or for response to incidents requiring immediate action by the authorities.
At Uber, we believe in safety on the move, which is why every day we work to provide you with a safer and more confident mobility experience. We are continuously committed, on a daily basis, to ensure full and regular compliance with all the applicable legal requirements, having the adequate mechanisms to intervene, whenever necessary. If you detect any behaviour or aspect that doesn’t seem right to you, please do not hesitate to report it.
