About the Role
We are looking for PhD intern candidates to contribute to the Product Platform data science in Summer 2019 (3 months). We seek candidates with a strong background in machine learning and statistics. You will be working with a data scientist mentor to define the intern project and develop the solution. During this program, you will get hands-on experience in transforming theoretical methods into practical application to solve real-world data science challenges. You will also get the chance to see and learn a variety of data science projects done by different teams and other interns to get insights on how data science is connected with and contributing to the business.
Within the product platform data science organization, you will be working in one of the following teams:
Customer Obsession: Building out customer experience product features to enable self-service of support issues via machine learning, NLP, and experimentation.
Experimentation Platform: Building methodologies to help Uber experiment at scale. We work on a variety of problems addressing AB testing, Multi-Arm Bandits and monitoring.
Intelligent Insights Assistant: Building an intelligent system to run analytics and generate insights with a click of a button. We are currently focused on causal inference, model interpretation, and time series correlation analysis.
What You’ll Do
Work with your mentor closely to scope a project, define the problem, and develop and prototype the solution
Work alongside engineers and product managers to understand the business use cases and production feasibility of your work, and collaborate on the experimentation and productionisation of your work
Develop creative solutions to product problems using a combination of empirical insights and sophisticated technical methods
Communicate with senior management and cross-functional teams
What You’ll Need
Ph.D. student (anticipated graduation in 2020) majoring in Machine Learning, Statistics, Economics, or other quantitative disciplines
Experience in modeling and algorithm development
Coding proficiency and the ability to develop statistical analysis and prototype algorithms in Python or R
Proficiency in SQL
Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders

The product platform data science team are building innovative and scalable solutions to power the business and product development in a broad technical area such as machine learning, experimentation, behavioral science, statistics, time series, finance, and NLP.
