Last Monday, in his keynote address to the Launch Festival, our CEO Travis hinted at a new feature that would “help smooth out the demand spike” at busy times for driver-partners and give riders an option for bypassing surge.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Surge Drop — which lets you know if surge pricing at your location ends within 30 minutes — will begin rolling out to iPhone users globally this week. In addition to seeing clear information about surge pricing in the app, you’ll be able to wait it out for a cheaper ride and get notified if surge ends. We’re taking transparency to the next level!

HOW IT WORKS

1. Tap the NOTIFY ME IF SURGE ENDS button

2. Confirm that you’d like us to send you a Push Notification if surge drops

3. Stick around or start saying your goodbyes; the choice is yours

(Note: To try this feature, you’ll first need to download the latest version of the Uber app from the App Store and follow the prompts to enable Push Notifications.  Surge Drop should be available in most cities by the end of this week.)

We know the whole reason you use Uber is that you’ve got places to go and people to see. We’ll stay true to our pledge to get you the fastest ride available, and sometimes that will require surge pricing to get more drivers on the road. But at those times when your schedule is flexible, you can hold out for a ride that’s as affordable as it is reliable.
