Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of charging at home?
If you have access to home charging, it is the most effective way to lower your daily costs and increase your overall earnings. Here are some reasons why:
- Home charging (especially overnight, when electricity prices are typically lower than during the day) is cheaper than using public rapid chargers.
- If you plug in when you go offline and start again with a full battery, you’ll spend more time on the road and less time waiting at stations.
What are the benefits of public charging?
Public charging is useful for quick charges during your time online. While the per-unit cost is higher than home charging, using a public charger allows you to stay active during busy periods.
- Rapid chargers can add significant range in 15-30 minutes, keeping you on the road when demand is high.
What types of chargers are there, and how do I find them?
There are different types of chargers and each suits a different moment in your day:
- Home charging (AC): Typically used to charge your vehicle over several hours or overnight. Charging time and cost depend on your vehicle, charger and local electricity rates.
- Public AC charging: Often available at locations such as shopping centers, offices and parking facilities. Typically slower than DC rapid charging.
- DC rapid charging: Designed to add range more quickly than AC charging. Actual charging speed and cost vary by vehicle, charger, battery level and other conditions.
To find chargers near you or along a route, use charging apps and maps that show locations, connector types and availability. Check which connector your vehicle uses before you go, not every plug fits every car.
How much does it cost to charge?
Charging an electric vehicle is on average cheaper than filling up a gas-powered vehicle. Home charging may cost less than public rapid charging. Charging costs vary depending on local electricity rates, the charging provider, charging speed and your vehicle.
Is an EV more expensive to maintain?
Electric vehicles generally have fewer mechanical components that require routine servicing than internal-combustion vehicles and do not require some ICE-specific maintenance, such as engine oil changes or spark-plug replacement. Actual maintenance costs vary by vehicle, usage and service provider.
How long does an EV battery last?
Batteries are built to last the life of the vehicle, and manufacturers typically back them with a separate warranty or a set number of kilometres — check the terms for the model you're considering.
What happens if there's a problem with the battery?
It very rarely means replacing the car. EV batteries are made up of multiple cells, often organized into modules within a battery pack. Depending on the vehicle and the type of issue, a service center may be able to repair or replace individual components or modules rather than replacing the entire battery pack. Battery warranties and repair options vary by manufacturer, so check the coverage for your specific vehicle.
Can I travel long-distances with an EV?
Yes, with some planning. With the right route and charging stops, electric vehicles can be used for longer trips. Charging maps and apps can help you map your journey and find charging stations along the way.
What tax and city benefits can I get with an EV?
Electric vehicles may qualify for certain tax, registration, or city-level benefits depending on where the vehicle is registered and operated. These can include reduced or exempt vehicle taxes and fees, exemptions from certain driving restrictions or emissions requirements, and access to EV-specific financing options.
Benefits vary by country, state, and city and may change over time. Drivers should check with the relevant local authorities and financial institutions to confirm which benefits apply before purchasing a vehicle.
¹ Products and offers availability may vary by market. Some products or offers may be facilitated by a third party, and agreement to such third party's terms may be required. Uber is not responsible for third-party products or offers.
