Located on the University of California Berkeley campus, Lower Sproul Plaza is 12 feet below Upper Sproul Plaza, accessible by a long flight of stairs. Designed in 1962, Lower Sproul Plaza is surrounded by Brutalist-style architecture, including the Chavez Student Center, and it connects to the Haas Pavilion and Recreational Sports Facility. The location of a wide range of cultural and musical performances and a popular hangout between classes, the lower plaza area is home to an 85-foot-long Modernist bas-relief mural depicting California landscapes.
