Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena in the Napa Valley is the area's oldest continuously operating winery. Originally established in 1876, the historic Beringer winery became California's first winery to offer public tours in 1934. It was also the first winery in the region to use hand-dug caves and cellars. Beringer's was also the first California winery to have Wine Spectator Magazine hail both a white and a red wine as Wine of the Year. Throughout its long history, the winery has changed owners several times, with the Beringer family selling the property and rights to the name back in 1971, but historic Rhine House and the cave tours remain open to the public to this day.
