Senior User Experience (UX) Researcher, Visual Perception, Attention and Performance

About this Role

 

We’re looking for someone to join the Safety User Experience Research team and lead our research related to visual perception, attention, cognition and performance. This position is based in San Francisco, California. As a member of our User Experience team, you will work closely with product and engineering teams, as well as global teams located in cities around the world.

What You'll Do:

  • Design studies from the ground up, and  conduct and analyze data using a variety of tools and methodologies
  • Leverage research insights to inform product roadmaps and product-related vision and strategy
  • Work closely with Uber’s internal researchers, designers, product managers, data scientists, and engineers
  • Contribute to the growing body of research on attention, perception and cognition by proactively identifying opportunities for new research
  • Develop scalable processes for the systematic evaluation of new products and features
  • Creatively communicate & evangelize strategic insights and guidance to members of the product, policy /communications , marketing & brand, and senior leadership

What You'll Need: 

  • Background in Human Factors, Transportation Studies, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering,, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience conducting rigorous multi-method, multi-measure research studies in academic, applied, and/or industry settings
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental design
  • Substantial experience using relevant testing equipment, such as occlusion goggles, driving simulators, eye tracking glasses, psychomotor vigilance tests, actigraphy testing, and other related tools
  • Experience using basic descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, such as ANOVA, correlation, regression, factor analysis, and general linear models
  • Familiarity with the general psychological processes underlying alertness, cognition, and human performance 

Preferred qualifications:

  • MS or PhD degree in Human Factors, Transportation Studies, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, Public Policy, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field
  •  4 + years of experience conducting rigorous multi-method, multi-measure research studies in academic, applied, and/or industry settings
  • Previous experience conducting research that improved the user experience of smartphone apps
  • Familiarity with established external guidelines related to safety, alertness, and cognition.
  • Experience testing safety, alertness, cognition, and performance in virtual testing environments
  • An expert understanding of the academic literature on alertness, performance , and general cognitive processes
  • Willingness  to travel within the United States and possibly abroad

Bonus characteristics:

  • Familiarity with a programming language commonly used for data manipulation and computational statistics (such as Python, R, Matlab, C++, Java or Go) and SQL
  • Smartphone app design expertise
  • Previous experience conducting research in APAC, EMEA, LATAM, SEA, and working on products with global impact
  • Ability to fluently communicate in languages other than English
  • Previous experience identifying, onboarding, and managing external research, translation, transcription, and tools vendors
