Director, Safety & Insurance Litigation, High Exposure
About the Role
The Safety & Insurance Litigation team oversees and manages litigation and claims across the U.S. & Canada arising out of Uber's insurance policies. In doing so, the team works hand-in-hand with our insurance partners and outside counsel to drive innovation and solutions. The team also works closely with Uber's business teams, from operations to safety, to evaluate and manage risk. The team is currently searching for a Director on its Safety & Insurance Litigation team to manage its High Exposure claims portfolio across the US & Canada with expertise in the insurance defense industry and experience managing robust insurance defense litigation. This role is based at Uber’s office in Chicago.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee a team that manages a portfolio of high severity claims and litigation in the US & Canada
- Help set team vision, priorities, and provide guidance on case strategy while managing results and performance
- Manage outside counsel across all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, expert development, motion practice, mediation, trial, and appeal
- Analyze claims inventories to develop mediation, settlement, and trial strategies that appropriately balance legal, financial, operational, and reputational considerations
- Collaborate with team members for operational efficiency and process revision
- Partner with Uber’s other teams on insurance, risk, safety, and regulatory efforts
What You’ll Need/Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of ten years (10) years of litigation experience in-house and/or at a leading law firm, with substantial experience handling complex liability or other high-exposure litigation
- J.D. and license to practice law in at least one U.S. state
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong leadership instincts with demonstrated ability to independently develop comprehensive vision, operate autonomously, make sound judgment calls on key issues, and methodically communicate and execute intended plans
- Ability to manage complex cases through pleadings, motion practice, discovery, dispute resolution and trial
- Excellent business judgment, communication, and relationship-management skills (with a high level of emotional intelligence)
- Experience partnering with finance, insurance, actuarial, or data analytics teams on litigation exposure and reserving strategy
- Prior regular interaction with company executives or senior leaders with demonstrated ability to synthesize legal, financial, operational, and reputational considerations into practical risk-management recommendations
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and managing competing priorities at scale
Highly versatile operator with the ability to seamlessly move between strategic planning and hands-on execution
Salesforce or other database experience
For Chicago, IL-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$266,000 per year - USD$295,500 per year.
