WHO's it with:
From Rides to Eats, Uber Freight to Elevate we are changing the way the world moves. Uber served 10 billion trips in 2018 and are currently operating in more than 700 cities, across 63 countries, enabling 15 million daily trips, and connecting over 90 million monthly active riders with 3.9 million active drivers.
We are making significant investments into our systems to support the continued growth at a much larger scale, globally. Our innovative payments team is at the heart of these International Engineering efforts.
We are building Uber Wallet as an integral part of Uber Money. Uber Wallet is a central place to manage how to pay & get paid by Uber, audit transactions and discover financial products. It's a product built for Uber scale, used across multiple Uber businesses (Rides, Eats, Freight and others).
WHAT you'll be doing:
This is a rare opportunity to lead a team of talented engineers who are building next-generation payments experiences, used by millions of customers per day, across a variety of apps.
In this new Leadership role you will be tasked with mentoring, developing and growing a team of world class backend and mobile software engineers to design and build experiences that are highly reliable and used by millions of people on a daily basis. Our bar for engineering quality is high, with planning being transparent using an RFC-like process, automated testing, code reviews, build tooling and rollout best practices being things all our Amsterdam teams follow and improve - as well as share on software craftsmanship conferences. Engineering culture does not improve just by chance here: we have dedicated developer experience, platform and infrastructure teams who focus on improving developer tooling and velocity, as well as systems reliability.
Alongside designers, UX researchers and Product experts you will work collaboratively with your talented team, to build new, innovative and scalable solutions that delight people. Testing ideas and thinking, challenging your team, and of course yourself, you will drive and execute ideas to make our products come to life. Our product culture is heavily data driven, people and teams being encouraged to bring ideas and challenge existing ones, using data as a shared language.
No two days will be the same in this challenging role, so your ability to be flexible in your work approach and deal with shifting priorities will be key to your success.
You will be empowered to achieve results, and encouraged to be autonomous. But don't worry - you won't be going on this journey alone! You will be supported by our experienced team in San Fran as well as surrounded by a team of 100+ Engineering gurus based here in Amsterdam with 10+ peer engineering managers, as well as teams in the Bay Area, who make up our unique inclusive and supportive technology community.
WHAT you'll need:
We are looking for an experienced Technology Leader who has led world class technical teams.
All of our leaders are hands-on with architecture and are familiar with code so we will expect you to be technically savvy having a proven track record of working with large-scale systems: may this be distributed systems (high-QPS, multi-tier architectures, monitoring, alerting and reliably operating these systems), mobile applications at scale, or both. We also expect familiarity with an object-oriented language: we use Java and Go on the backend, and Java and Swift for native mobile development.
Keeping the team focused and working on the right thing is a key responsibility you'll have. Working with product and business stakeholders, you'll ensure there's a clear roadmap and you will have a track record of enabling teams to execute efficiently in an agile way, mitigating risks in a pragmatic way, as they come up. You will have had good experience working in a product-driven environment, balancing shipping business value and ensuring long-term maintainability and extensibility.
You will enjoy being hands on but also capable of looking at the big picture. You will take pride in your ability to both nurture and grow high-performing teams. And your results focused approach will enable us to get results at scale and pace.
Don't worry if you don't tick all the boxes we would still be interested in hearing from you!
WHY you'll want it:
We're not just another social web app, we're moving real people and assets and reinventing transportation and logistics globally. This is an opportunity to build technology that changes the way the world moves, to build real products that impact millions of people daily!
You will be working with world class technologists in an environment that inspires creativity and innovation. And will have the opportunity to use your leadership skills to grow a team as well as keeping your technical skills on fresh, working with cutting edge tech you will be the envy of your friends. You will be challenged daily and constantly learning and will be encouraged to take yourself and your team to the next level
