About the Role

Uber is changing the world, and the Uber Legal Team is proud to be part of that. We're looking to hire an exceptional attorney with expertise in payments and financial services to join the Uber Legal Team

Uber's Payments Legal Team is a global practice group within the Uber Legal team focused on financial services product and capability support across all of Uber's product lines and business units

Working closely with the regional payment legal lead for Latin America, you will be responsible for dedicated legal support to Uber's Payments functions in Brazil. This will include advising on the implications of the so-called 'Payments Law' for technology companies enabling payment solutions in Brazil, as well as delivering a large-scale and sophisticated payments operation for those using Uber's appsWhile your main area of focus will be the Brazil payment and fintech environments, as Uber expands its payments and financial services across LatAm, you may also be asked to contribute with regulatory consultations, negotiation of strategic payment partnerships and with the drafting of agreements involving other countries of the region. Experience dealing with regulators, including in a supervisory context, whilst managing innovative and fast-moving product cycles is essential

What You'll Do

  • You will work with colleagues from across Uber, including Legal, Product, Operations, Finance, and Business Development
  • You will make a real difference to the economic opportunities and financial inclusion agenda for people across the world - as Uber expands its global financial product capabilities
  • You will be part of the teams securing high profile commercial partnerships and deals with material business impact, including network partnerships, new payment acceptance models and revenue recovery strategies that enhance the experience for all those who use our app
  • You will be a key advisor on legal risks and opportunities, with a focus on payments and fintech/regtech innovations, development of financial services regulations, consumer protection themes, AML, KYC, sanctions, data privacy considerations and other areas where the law meets the business
  • You will stay abreast of financial regulations that could impact Uber's business model and growth in the region
  • You will be involved in the design, planning and launch of new and exciting product developments and business initiatives across the region and internationally
  • You will manage outside counsel locally, including budget planning and monitoring with the aim to ensure that the company receives cost effective legal advice

What You'll Need

  • An enthusiastic, team player with a passion for how technology can influence people's lives responsibly and within the law
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in Brazil with preference for a mix of in-house and law firm background but we will consider candidates with less experience if they meet our other requirements
  • Professional proficiency in English and Portuguese
  • Strong knowledge of the laws and regulations that regulate payments and other types of financial services. Knowledge of regulated payments and issues in Brazil required and across LatAm a plus
  • Understanding of legal principles applicable to payments and risk, including the payments ecosystem (e.g., the role of acquiring and issuing banks, card networks, payment processors, gateways, risk vendors, etc.), regulatory implications (e.g., stored value, money transmission, financial services and other payments, cross-border and international regulatory issues) and consumer protection laws
  • Knowledge of major payment network rules and processes and experience dealing with major payment networks
  • Experience advising regulated payment entities and supporting payments compliance programs
  • Experience negotiating and drafting commercial contracts and partnerships involving provision of payment and financial services
  • Strong legal regulatory background, and experience dealing with government agencies and regulators
  • Qualified attorney and Member of Bar Association
  • Possess excellent business judgment, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic about Uber
