Safety Standards Engineering Lead

Systems Safety, Advanced Technologies Group
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

About the Role

At Uber ATG, Safety Standards must equip the organization with the information it needs to lead the industry toward a safe, sustainable self-driving implementation. It requires solving a complex engineering challenge within an evolving regulatory landscape. It is important for the teams tackling the development of safety standards to be well-informed of development efforts in other areas, to build a complete picture of the industry and the environment that they are operating in, and to innovate where there needs for new solutions. Safety Standards serves as the principal source of information on state of the industry standards, best practices, recommendations, and due care. Safety Standards ensures that Uber ATG establishes internal standards that are well informed and deeply aligned with current legal requirements, industry-leading direction, Uber ATG's technical approaches, and that Uber ATG's engineers are appropriately cognizant of the standards applicable to the work they do.

As a Safety Standards Engineering Lead at Uber ATG, you will understand the goals of external stakeholders and policy makers in the self-driving space and the types of standards they envision. In parallel, you will also work closely with Uber ATG's Engineering, Product, and Safety teams to understand the technology roadmap and any operational constraints, from a technical perspective. Well-prepared with knowledge from both sides, you will lead the development of both internal standards and proposals for external collaborative technical groups. You will work cross-functionally with development teams across Uber ATG groups towards reaching a common understanding of and resolution on key technical challenges. This highly impactful work is deeply aligned with Uber ATG's goal to promote transparency within the industry to further the safe development of self-driving vehicles.

  • Become a cross-functional superhero within the organization, understanding and appropriately representing perspectives from a diverse range of stakeholders and leading groups to resolution.
  • Maintain ATG Standards with current and pending requirements consistent with the Safety Case Framework.
  • Investigate and respond to questions related to regulations, standards, best practices, and compliance
  • Interface with the broader Safety Team to ensure standards are understood, adapted, and implemented into requirements.
  • Develop and maintain process and methods for compliance documentation
  • Coordinate with Safety Standards, Product Safety and Organization Safety teams to investigate unexpected performance issues.
  • Interact with internal ATG stakeholders to help coordinate and establish technical positions related to future regulations, industry standards and best practices and associated test procedures.
  • Represent ATG to industry by participating in technical working groups and influencing and shaping future industry standards and best practices.
  • Conduct in-depth review of new or existing standards for applicability to the AV industry and provide recommendations for requirements of performance, development and manufacture of SDVs.
  • Maintains government regulatory requirements, documentation, information, guidance and interpretations that apply to the SDV operated by ATG.

What You'll Need

About The Team

At the Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), we are building technologies that will transform the way the world moves. Our teams in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Boulder, and Toronto are dedicated to mapping, software and hardware development, vehicle safety, and operations for self-driving technology. Our teams are passionate about developing a self-driving system that will one day move people and things around more safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

At Uber, we believe technology has the power to make transportation more efficient, accessible, and safer than ever before. Self-driving technology has the potential to make these benefits an everyday reality for our customers, but it's not going to happen overnight. Building best-in-class self-driving technology will take time, and safety is our priority every step of the way. Operating inclusively and transparently, while displaying responsible behavior in a structured development are critical to safety. We at ATG seek candidates who will role model these values.
