About the role
You'll be responsible for building and supporting part of the complete backend infrastructure for i18n ( internationalization) at Uber. You will work with 1000s of Uber engineers ( both mobile and backend) to help them understand the internationalization process at Uber and help them localize their products. You will build/deploy and support services that deliver high quality translated content to the Uber apps and services using best/latest practices at Uber. You will be responsible for collaborating with external third party providers that Uber i18n is connected to. You will also be responsible to collaborate and help out the localization team and cater to their needs.
What You'll Do
The internationalization team is solving difficult problems such as: Uber ships its app to the app store continuously. There are hundreds of engineers committing to these repositories. You will seamlessly integrate high quality, up-to-date translations into that flow.
Uber's engineering style is one of continuous deployment. You will make sure the new translations that are available get to the app and services in matter of seconds.
Uber's micro service architecture is made up of thousands of services in multiple programming languages. You will maintain a consistent experience for both developers and end users (e.g. plurals/genders, ICU / CLDR integrations, bidi, pseudo localization, i18n testing, best practices, etc.)?
Uber has a strong team of localization program managers and linguists, you will work with them to cater to their needs by adding features and building tooling.
Since internationalization is used by 1000s of other engineers are Uber you will work with teams that standardize the best practices for all of Uber engineering and take i18n to that level.
You will work with technologies like Golang, java, python, Mysql, Nosql.
What You'll Need
3+ years full-time professional software development experience.
Enthusiasm for our mission: We want Uber to feel as local to users in Jakarta and Tel Aviv as it does in San Francisco. You're excited to use your unique background and experiences to solve the problems mentioned above. Knowledge of i18n/L10n is a huge plus.
Architecture: Knowledge of data structures and an eye for architecture. You can discuss the tradeoff between architectural choices, both on a theoretical level and on an applied level. You should be able to design database schemas in extensible way.
Strong coding/debugging abilities: You have advanced knowledge of at least one programming language, and are happy to learn more. Our codebase is primarily in Golang.
Product sense: You create more than beautiful code. Engineers at Uber play a crucial role in choosing what we build and how we build it.
A penchant for collaboration & a team player: You enjoy working cross collaboratively to drive impact across orgs. You believe that you can achieve more on a team that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You rely on others' candid feedback for continuous improvement.
