About the Role

Uber is changing the world, and the Uber Legal Team is proud to be part of that. We're looking to hire an exceptional attorney with expertise in payments and financial services to join the Uber Legal Team.

Uber's Payments Legal Team is a global practice group within the Uber Legal team focused on financial services product and capability support across all of Uber's product lines and business units.

Having transformed how the world moves by creating the ride-sharing business, Uber is now changing how the world uses money. This role presents a unique opportunity to advise against exciting, cutting edge, and challenging legal issues related to Uber's payments platforms.

Working closely with colleagues in the Payments Legal and Compliance functions, you will be responsible for providing dedicated legal support to Uber's Payments and Financial Services Product teams. You will work with product managers, engineers, compliance, risk, and other key functions to empower these teams to build sophisticated financial products and payments platforms. You will support regulatory and product engagements in the US and globally to enable products and platform innovation, as well as support partnerships with banks, payment processors, FinTech startups, and other financial institutions, to deliver a tailored, large-scale, and complex global payments operation. Experience with federal and state financial services laws, financial regulators, and innovative and fast-moving product cycles is essential.

What You'll Do

  • You will work with colleagues from across Uber, including Legal, Product, Operations, Finance, and Business Development, helping to set strategy and provide legal leadership.
  • You will make a real difference to the economic opportunities and financial inclusion agenda for people across the world - as Uber expands its global financial product capabilities.
  • You will be part of the teams securing high profile commercial partnerships and deals with material business impact, including network partnerships, new payment acceptance models and revenue recovery strategies that enhance the experience for all those who use our app.
  • You will be a key advisor to business leadership on legal risks and opportunities, with a focus on payments and fintech/regtech innovations, development of financial services regulations, consumer protection themes, AML, KYC, sanctions, data privacy considerations and other areas where the law meets the business.
  • You will stay abreast of financial regulations that could impact Uber's business model and growth in the region.
  • You will be involved in the design, planning and launch of new and exciting product developments and business initiatives across the region and internationally.
  • You will manage outside counsel regionally, including budget planning and monitoring with the aim to ensure that the company receives cost effective legal advice.

What You'll Need

  • An enthusiastic, team player with a passion for how technology can influence peoples lives responsibly and within the law.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience with preference for a mix of in-house and law firm background.
  • Strong knowledge of the laws and regulations that regulate payments and other types of financial transactions.
  • Understanding of legal principles applicable to payments and risk, including the payments ecosystem (e.g., the role of acquiring and issuing banks, card networks, payment processors, gateways, risk vendors, etc.), regulatory implications (e.g., stored value, money transmission and other payments, cross-border and international regulatory issues) and consumer protection laws.
  • Knowledge of major payment network rules and processes and experience dealing with major payment networks.
  • Experience advising regulated payment entities and supporting payments compliance programs.
  • Strong legal regulatory background, and experience dealing with government agencies and regulators.
  • Qualified attorney and Member of Bar Association or otherwise eligible to practice as In-House Counsel.
  • Possess excellent business judgment, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Enthusiastic about Uber!
