Associate Tax Counsel - Tax Controversy

About the Role

Assist Tax Controversy Team in managing US federal, state and local as well as global audits, appeals and litigation. This position will have insight into Uber's global tax positions, be able to develop responses to tax authority questions about those positions, and assist in communication of the significant matters to both Global Tax teams and the broader Finance function

What You'll Do

  • Assist Tax controversy Team in representing Uber in tax audits, appeals and litigation matters, including:
    • Development of protest and defense of tax positions
    • Appeals hearing
    • Litigation strategies
    • Drafting and reviewing legal agreements and court documents
    • Management of outside counsel
    • Negotiation of final audit settlements
  • Coordinate with the Tax Compliance and Reporting, Transfer Pricing and Strategy & Planning teams to ensure tax positions are correctly reported and appropriately disclosed, are properly documented and defensible, and tax return files are audit ready.
  • Advise non-US teams re: non-US tax audits relating to direct and indirect taxation ensuring consistency in information and approach.
  • Develop and document facts relating to tax positions
  • Perform legal research re: tax positions, and document positions
  • Identify and execute on opportunities to pursue tax refunds and direct the related refund claim process and the development of documentation to defend the refund claims under audit.
  • Assist in preparation of comprehensive monthly audit reports including scenario analysis for the CFO and Global Head of Tax to address the short and long-term financial impact of audits.

What You'll Need

  • Minimum 3 years of experience at a large law firm or Big 4
  • Active Bar membership required
