About the Role

We are currently searching for a Counsel, Employment to be based in San Francisco, California with expertise in employment law as we continue to expand Uber and launch new products across the United States. This Counsel will support business partners through product counseling on employment risk as well as by managing disputes, including audits, claims, arbitrations, individual lawsuits, and class actions. This Counsel will also support human resource professionals throughout the United States.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in all areas of employment law, with particular emphasis on the independent contractor legal landscape, including relevant federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Advise business partners on existing and new products to mitigate legal risk and review business and marketing materials.
  • Strategize and collaborate regarding the independent contractor business model, including identifying and interpreting employment law developments and changes in the law.
  • Actively manage litigation, including demand letters, individual arbitrations and lawsuits, as well as class actions on a nationwide basis.
  • Provide advice and counsel to management and human resources partners on a broad range of employment issues, including: recruiting, hiring, employee relations, discipline, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour compliance, contingent worker issues, and internal investigations. Should have working knowledge of Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, and FLSA.
  • Recommend, manage and implement various projects and programs that support team goals. Ensure projects are completed in accordance with company guidelines, quality standards, budget, and targeted time frame.

What You'll Need

  • J. D. with at least 5+ years of legal experience with employment law
  • Active membership in at least one U. S. state bar (California preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues
  • Consistent good judgment and ability to apply legal knowledge to help create practical business solutions
  • Flexibility, a positive attitude, a sense of humor and ability to constructively manage change
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • In-house legal experience preferred, particularly in connection with technology platforms
