About the role

With safety as the main priority, Test Support Specialists will help to test new software and hardware on our Self-Driving Ubers so that we can bring our technology to the world sooner. You will be responsible for monitoring all systems in the vehicle while providing clear and concise feedback to developers within the company.

As a Test Support Specialist, you will support scenario testing for various teams at Uber's Test Operations facilities. You will work closely with other Specialists, managers and occasionally engineers to execute and support AV testing on a closed course.

What You'll Do

  • Safely operate support vehicles and equipment during live testing
  • Stand in as an "actor" as defined by scenarios; drive non-autonomous vehicles, bikes as needed
  • Keep props and vehicles in good condition; engage with light hand tools (manual and electric); conduct general duties required to ensure track readiness for testing
  • Keep garage organized and clean
  • Undergo training and operate utility equipment (e.g. boom lift, fork truck, skid loader)
  • Provide safety introductions to visitors
  • Prepared to spend extended periods of time outside in all varieties of weather
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures and tests from the support perspective
  • Interact with the public as an ambassador for Uber's self-driving technology
  • Uphold safety culture and standards in every aspect of the job*

What You'll Need

  • Proficiency with computers. Knowledge of Google Suite and CAD programs preferred.
  • Valid US driver's license required
  • At least 21 years of age and at least 5 years of driving experience.*
  • The ability to operate independently with little or no supervision
  • Excellent at written and verbal communication with vehicle technicians, test engineers, and management
  • Proven interest and technical capability to work with modern automotive systems
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver's license and clean driving history, validated by an MVR check.*
  • Must pass safety and performance checkpoints during initial and continued training*
  • Must pass drug screening, both upon initial employment and randomized tests*
  • Comply with a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use of alcohol or drugs by self-driving vehicle operators during a shift*
  • Pass DOT physical*
  • Pass criminal background check*
  • Drive a vehicle for up to 10 hrs per day
  • Use a laptop in a moving vehicle for up to 10 hours per day
  • Perform repetitive task at a desk and using a computer for 10 hours per day
  • Support Testing in outdoor conditions for 10 hours per day
  • Comfortable working on rotating shifts, possibly early morning, late evening, graveyard and weekends. *
  • Comfortable with travel for up to one month at a time.*

Bonus Points if

  • Bachelor of Science in a technical field
  • FAA Drone Pilot License
  • Experience operating and maintaining heavy machinery
  • Vehicle maintenance experience
  • OSHA and other safety certifications
  • Experience and certification operating heavy equipment, e.g., fork truck, boom lift, scissor lift
  • Experience and certifications working on mechanical projects (i.e. certifications in engine mechanics, bicycle mechanics, or similar)
