About the Roles

Under the hood of the Uber platform is a large-scale, microservice-based architecture that facilitates the reliability and scalability of our products. We’re growing three of these teams to be based in Amsterdam, read about each below. Developer Platform Team:

We scale a robust platform and tools to solve Uber’s unique build, code and dependency management challenges. You will help delight our engineering teams, and enable the whole engineering organization to iterate rapidly. We create and contribute to open source software and collaborate with other industry leading tech companies with the belief that every developer should be productive. We’re pushing the boundary of what’s possible to make Engineers forget about infrastructure and focus on creating incredible solutions for our customers.

Observability Team:

Observability provides a centralized, reliable, and interactive Telemetry platform including metrics, logging and tracing that empowers engineers to work quickly and confidently at scale. The tracing team, one of the core parts of the telemetry platform, is responsible for providing an end to end distributed tracing solution (Jaeger), driving adoption and integration with thousands of micro services within the Uber engineering ecosystem.

Storage Team:

We are looking for tenacious engineers to join the Primary Storage team whose mission is to develop and support the technology storing the majority of the operational data at Uber. We provide a manageable, reliable, high QoS database backend ideal for large scale workloads. Together with that we provide the infrastructure that connects real-time databases to the Big Data Platform that powers business decisions at Uber.

What You’ll Do

  • Design system architecture, own key components to deliver distributed tracing solutions for Uber.
  • Join on call rotation, driving continuous improvements on system availability, scalability, performance and efficiency.
  • Provide technical leadership, influence fellow engineers and role model solid engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with other infrastructure teams, production engineer team and product manager to drive adoption and outstanding practices, and to design and implement high impact, cross-product features.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience
  • BS or higher degree in Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • FrontEnd: Proficient in Javascript/Typescript, CSS, Node.js,  FrontEnd framework.  Has proven experience architecting, building, and maintaining web applications
  • Excellent coding abilities
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with relevant experience in implementing large-scale web applications with React.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Consistent record of building and operating highly reliable distributed systems at scale.
  • This role requires a lot of organizational alignment and consensus building - excellent written and verbal communication skills is a huge plus.
  • Experience with OpenTelemetry, and/or building and operating monitoring infrastructure at large scale. E.g. PB sized ES clusters, Prometheus, Kibana, Grafana, Jaeger, etc.
  • Batch and stream data process pipeline experience is a plus.
  • Passionate about pursuing technical excellence and mentoring engineers

Offices continue to be central to collaboration and Uber’s cultural identity.
