Counsel/Senior Counsel, Tax Controversy

This is not a remote role. It is required to be located in San Francisco, New York, Washington DC or Dallas. We have a hybrid work model so you must be willing to come into the office half of the time. Tuesdays and Thursdays are anchor days that are in-office required days company wide.

In Finance, we work hand-in-hand with leaders across the company to ensure smooth, disciplined execution of strategic business objectives. Our Tax & Reporting team builds scalable and well-controlled processes to support timely and accurate financial, statutory reporting, and ensure compliance with regional and local tax regulations.

About the Role

Uber is looking to add a Tax Counsel, Tax Controversy to our growing team! This role will report to our Senior Tax Counsel, Tax Controversy, with a primary focus on US federal and state audits. This is an amazing opportunity to join our Tax team and make an immediate impact. This role requires strong business acumen and communication skills, coupled with experience in tax audit and controversy work. What You'll Do

  • Develop a consistent global tax risk management strategy addressing the significant tax issues faced across the world
  • Coordinate with the Tax Compliance and Reporting, Transfer Pricing and Strategy & Planning teams to ensure we have accurately described and reported tax contingencies
  • Direct and develop audit defense and appeals for all US Federal and State taxes
  • Work with the Senior Tax Counsel, Tax Controversy and Tax subject matter experts to develop innovative approaches to favorably settle tax audits, providing direction to the global tax planning and tax compliance teams to minimize Uber's overall tax liability
  • Oversee and coordinate all US audit, and significant non-US tax audit and appeals processes ensuring consistency in information and approach
  • Direct and approve the flow of information to all tax authorities from tax team members

Basic Qualifications

  • JD required, with active membership in a state bar
  • 5+ years of experience in a accounting firm, law firm and/or in-house at a multinational corporate group with experience in tax controversy (Counsel)
  • 8+ years of experience in a accounting firm, law firm and/or in-house at a multinational corporate group with experience in tax controversy (Senior Counsel)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clear communication of legal concepts and ability to develop a positive narrative regarding tax positions
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear advice in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to clearly communicate recommendations based on risk analysis in a highly ambiguous environment
  • Experience in broad areas of tax advisory in a large law firm and large corporate environment
  • Experience managing tax audits and appeals
  • Experience in broad areas of tax advisory

For New York City-based roles: The salary range for this role is $189,000 per year - $210,000 per year. You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award, commissions & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
