Sr Systems Engineer - Sustaining Operations

In this role, you will use your systems engineering, hardware/Linux OS/kernel knowledge, and infrastructure systems experience to investigate and solve ambiguous problems in our production fleet while also contributing to planning, new systems design, and improvement of existing tools and systems to enable even greater efficiency and insight.

About the Role

Uber Systems Engineers help Uber grow its service to more people worldwide by operating and improving our production fleet and the supporting systems that allow us to scale our hardware infrastructure gracefully and optimally.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant SRE and/or DevOps engineering experience
  • BS degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field
  • Strong hands-on experience with Linux investigating and debugging performance problems
  • Ability to root cause problems at the intersection of the Kernel and hardware
  • Background in multiple programming languages, e.g., C/C++, Python, Go, etc.
  • An instinct and intuition to automate whatever you can and improve the efficiency of our processes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to write detailed design documents, post mortems
  • Attention to detail, particularly around software engineering fundamentals, testing methodologies, and quality

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of Linux kernel internals, e.g., ability to read and understand kernel code.
  • Experience in kernel, hardware performance evaluation, tuning, and debugging. systemtap, perf, and eBPF are some of our day-to-day tools.
  • Experience in hardware health monitoring solutions - building and/or deploying them
  • Solid understanding of server hardware at scale: data center network fundamentals, OS imaging, provisioning, distribution, and configuration deployment at a large scale
  • Proficiency with hardware component design internals (e.g., understanding of an MSR register)
