About The Role

As the Senior Engineering Manager on Experimentation, Uber's A/B Testing and Marketplace Experimentation Platform, you will have a profound impact on a wide variety of technology teams spanning multiple focus areas. We are looking for an experienced leader who possesses top-class leadership experience in building and scaling high performing teams who are responsible for mission-critical, reliable platforms at the boundary between engineering and data science.

The Experimentation Team builds self service tools for running A/B, Switchback, and Synthetic Control experiments. These allow internal customers to configure, run, and analyze experiments. Our services are in the core flow of every product launch decision at the company and as a result are in the critical path of almost every app request into Ubers services across every product. XP is responsible for building high scale robust systems to support this load and demand as well as the data science tools needed to allow specialists to intuitively review experimental results. The team is full stack with front-end, mobile, backend, and data engineers on the team.

As the Senior Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for managing and scaling the above mentioned high impact organization through multiple managers and senior tech leads.

What you'll do

  • Drive vision & strategy for building the experimentation platform;
  • Lead through multiple managers and senior engineers across backend, data, mobile, and front-end engineering;
  • Partner closely with data scientists to build cutting end data decision making tools;
  • Provide technical leadership to design and build systems that can stand the test of scale and availability;
  • Partner effectively with cross-company engineering groups, data science, product, and other internal partners to represent the experimentation team;
  • Build trust, foster a collaborative team culture and help grow the respective leaders in each of the focus areas;
  • Maintain a culture of engineering excellence and craftsmanship.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience as an engineering manager;
  • 2+ years of proven experience leading multiple teams through Engineering Managers and Technical Leads;
  • Experience going through the full software cycle of requirements, design, coding/testing, rollout/deploy and best practices in delivering world-class software and services;
  • Experience evolving and presenting a strong vision/roadmap for your team;
  • Passion about your team's mission and the self-starting personality to make things happen;
  • A track record of building teams with a culture of craftsmanship and engineering excellence;
  • A track record of delivering results even when requirements are under-specified.

Preferred Qualifications

A candidate with some mix of the following qualifications is preferred. It's not expected that applicants have experience with every item. If you meet many of these requirements please apply! In general, we're looking for someone who is conversant in data science or statistics with a track record of building multi-disciplinary teams that ship at high scale.

  • BS/MS/PhD degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience;
  • Experience building or using A/B testing infrastructure;
  • Experience building engineering or analytics tools or data products;
  • A background in applied statistics with experience building systems at the boundary between data science and engineering;
  • Experience shipping high scale systems: 100,000+ QPS;
  • Experience managing teams with diverse technical backgrounds like front-end, backend, mobile, and data engineering;
  • Proven track record of growing and mentoring accomplished staff ICs and EMs.
