Staff Software Engineer, Data Transformation Platform

About the Role

Data underpins our products, enabling intelligent decision-making, and improved user experiences. Our team builds state-of-the-art data processing frameworks to move data across multi-datacenters, transform it into a usable form and load it into the systems for making insightful decisions. The platform enables data scientists, data engineers, and analysts at Uber to produce high-quality curated data and scales for a large number of workflows running in multi-tenancy with great security and isolation.

What the Candidate Will Do:

We are looking for a technical lead to join our team to build a next-generation data transformation platform that's reliable and scales across multi-datacenters, tackle challenges of large-scale orchestration, scheduling, and distributed services, implement high-demand workflow frameworks and solutions, build dev tools and ecosystems for data scientists and data engineers.

As a staff software engineer:

  • You engage with stakeholders across teams to lead the development and maintenance of platforms and solutions to support user-facing products or infrastructure tools used across Uber.
  • Build a scalable, reliable, and performant big data processing platform for Uber's data scientists/engineers, AI/ML engineers, and operations folks.
  • You drive efficiency and reliability improvements through design and automation: performance, scaling, observability, and monitoring.
  • Be technical lead to the team, mentor junior engineers, and review the technical design, code, and documentation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Computer Science and related fields
  • 8+ years of software development experience
  • Strong programming skills with Python or Java
  • Strong experience with software development and distributed systems and services
  • Experience developing automation utilities and tools to enable faster data consumption.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong domain experience in large-scale distributed systems with knowledge of data scheduling, orchestration, processing, and big data stack.
  • Deep understanding of the distributed system and Big Data architecture, experience with large-scale distributed services and storage (Zookeeper, Kafka, ELK, SQL DB, Hive, Cassandra, Presto, Hudi, etc)
  • Understand data processing and ETL, hands-on building pipelines and workflow framework through Hive, HDFS, Presto, Spark, etc.
  • Experience in building realtime streaming applications using Apache Flink, Spark etc
  • Understand SQL and Non-SQL storage and proficient SQL-like Queries.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges and implement data solutions that scale to meet future needs.
  • Track record of successful partnerships with product and engineering teams resulting in on-time delivery of impactful data products.
  • Passion for learning new technologies/domains and challenging the status quo.

Offices continue to be central to collaboration and Uber's cultural identity. Unless formally approved to work fully remotely, Uber expects employees to spend at least half of their work time in their assigned office. For certain roles, such as those based at green-light hubs, employees are expected to be in-office for 100% of their time.
