About the Role

The Uber Technical Program Management (TPM) team plays a critical role carrying out high-impact org-wide initiatives and continuously improving processes to increase the effectiveness of our product and engineering organizations.

Data Platform at Uber powers several use cases across Product, Engineering, Data Science and Operations groups spanning Rides, Uber Eats, Delivery, Safety, Maps and many other areas. Data volumes at Uber have experienced exponential growth, and Uber's systems rely heavily on these rich datasets to derive insights and make real-time decisions. To power these many critical analytics use cases and at a large scale, Uber's Data Platform is engineered to be one of the most sophisticated in the world.

A TPM in this role will structure and drive large complex cross-team technical initiatives in Data Platform spanning Capacity, Platform Efficiency, Reliability, Cloud, Workflows automation, BI automation, etc to name a few. Specifically, the TPM will own the problem space, work closely with engineering/product leads to conceptualize solutions, organize/align multiple engineering teams for delivery and drive execution demonstrating breakthroughs/critical metrics. They will look for ways to standardize, ensure execution is efficient and consistent, and set accountability by tracking progress, resolving dependencies, identifying issues, evaluating risks and communicating status to upper management and project stakeholders. The TPM will intrinsically act as a coach to engage and energize the product and engineering teams to achieve daring goals.

What the Candidate Will Do:

TPMs move fluidly from the big picture to details so that the team can deliver sophisticated and strategic multi-functional projects, often with tight deadlines. You are a bridge and a connector for the company. You are intuitive, focused, driven, organized, informative and productive. You break through communication issues and effectively develop relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization. You build trust across the organization. You are not afraid to be direct, but you strive to act with emotional intelligence and integrity. TPM work involves the following:

  • Manage sophisticated and large scale cross-team, multi-functional initiatives . Work with engineering managers and engineers to estimate work efforts, define breakthroughs and manage resources. Track progress, resolve dependencies, evaluate risks and communicate status to upper management and project stakeholders. Engage and energize the project teams to achieve daring goals.
  • Experience with data mining, business intelligence or data analytics products and solutions
  • Proactively remove obstacles to drive momentum and progress. Identify communication gaps, manage issue escalations and provide support to teams balancing competing priorities. Drive results proactively.
  • Understand technical implementation at the architecture level and propose technical alternatives when necessary. Ask questions that clarify priorities and push the team to be highly effective. Develop broad domain and technical knowledge.
  • Help manage the cross-functional strategic planning and business planning process, leading conversations with key stakeholders to develop concepts for strategic initiatives, and developing those into detailed program / project plans (including roadmaps, funding planning, resource planning and hiring goals).
  • Continuously improve and scale the organization. Implement continuous improvements to the engineering organization and the program management process. Share program/project process frameworks, tools, and best practices that can be adopted throughout the organization. Improve product development and delivery. Mentor project management skills within our engineering leadership team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a TPM or Engineering Manager in a software, SaaS, or systems development environment.
  • Strong technical experience in large distributed systems, Data Warehousing, Data Lake at scale
  • Technical degree with years of software development experience and exposure to large scale infrastructure in a distributed systems environment
  • Solid technical aptitude and an ability to understand technical designs, challenges, and risks. Engineers enjoy working closely with you.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and exceptional emotional intelligence.
  • Proven strong cross-team and cross-org stakeholder management.
  • Analytical and truth seeking. Ability to understand complex concepts and make reasoned decisions objectively.
  • Metrics driven: Experience determining effective program KPI's and using them to measure program success and issues.
  • Strong organizational skills to juggle many tasks without losing sight of the highest priority items.
  • Excellent in identifying process gaps, measuring progress, and balancing engineering and product efficiency with process overhead.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Hadoop ecosystem, i.e. large scale Data Analytics using HDFS, YARN, Hive, Kafka, Spark, etc.
  • Computer Science degree, or related field.
  • Developer experience, including writing, testing and deploying code.
