From Wednesday 16 January, a clean air fee of 15p per mile will be included on every trip picked up in London (within the M25). The money raised will go towards helping drivers upgrade to an electric vehicle (EV) and other clean air initiatives. Once drivers have an EV, the Clean Air Fee can then be used to support ongoing vehicle costs.
From Wednesday 16 January, every mile driven during a trip (excluding travel to the pick-up point) will include a 15p Clean Air Fee as part of the recommended fare. You will then be able to apply for assistance towards the costs of upgrading to an EV in the future based on your recommended Clean Air Fees.
For example, a driver using the app for an average of 40 hours per week could apply for around £3,000 of support towards an EV in two years’ time and £4,500 in three years. While a driver who averages 20 hours on the app could apply for around £1,500 in two years and £2,250 in three years.
You’ll be able to apply for EV assistance once you have reached £1,000. We expect this to take around 6-12 months for a driver using the app for an average of 40 hours per week.
We’re committed to playing our part in building cleaner towns and cities. Driving an EV will contribute towards lowering air pollution levels and help you to avoid costs associated with important initiatives in London, including the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and Congestion Charging Zone, which will apply to private hire vehicles that don’t meet emission criteria from April 8, 2019.

Every driver using the app in London will be able to apply for EV assistance to help them move into an EV. The amount of support drivers can apply for will depend on the number of miles they have driven on the app – the more miles they drive, the higher the potential support. Once a driver has upgraded, the additional Clean Air Fee will still be added to the recommended fare, but will then only be subject to the usual service fee. The balance can be used to support the additional costs of being in an EV.
The Clean Air Fee is 15p per mile and will be included in the recommended fare for all trips booked through the app and picked up in London (within the M25). This includes pick ups at Heathrow airport. There will also be an increase in the service fee of the same amount. The Clean Air Fee will be applied across all products in London (ie. UberX, XL, EXEC, LUX, Assist, Access, POOL). It will not apply to cancellation fees. It will not be subject to surge.
London is moving towards a zero-emission future and we want to support this transition for drivers. From April 2019, there will be further regulation that will increase driving costs for polluting vehicles. Electric vehicles will be exempt from upcoming emission charges.
Every TfL licensed driver using the Uber app in London is able to apply - both existing and future drivers joining the platform. We want to support all London drivers using the app with their future upgrade into an EV.
So long as a driver has completed at least 1 trip in a rolling 6 month period, Uber will calculate an amount of EV assistance for which the driver can apply. This amount will be based on that driver’s recommended Clean Air Fees. If you don’t do a trip in a 6 month period, your previous EV assistance amount will expire.
To apply for EV assistance, a driver needs to have completed at least 150 trips in the past 8 weeks. The amount for which they can apply must also be at least £1,000.
Please check T&Cs for further information on eligibility criteria. Please note drivers will not have any cash entitlement unless and until Uber approves the relevant EV assistance.
If they meet the eligibility criteria, drivers are then able to choose from one of a number of selected deals for buying or rental and apply for EV assistance. Once all the checks are complete, and if the application is approved, Uber will transfer the EV assistance directly to the approved dealer. We are no longer committing to restrict the platform for diesels and petrols by the end of 2019 in London. We want the Clean Air Plan to give flexibility for drivers to choose when to upgrade on their terms. We’ve now set ourselves the aim of making every car on the app in London fully electric by 2025.
If you’re already in an EV, the additional 15p per mile will still be part of the recommended trip fare, but will then only be subject to the usual service fee. The balance can be used to support the additional costs of being in an EV.

The Clean Air Plan is designed to help tackle some of the key challenges drivers face in upgrading to cleaner vehicles. The plan will only be available to drivers in London initially, but we’re excited to start helping to build a cleaner future. We are keen to expand to other UK cities, so look out for more information from us.

The Clean Air Fee is included in the recommended fare for each trip. For drivers not yet in EVs, an amount equal to the Clean Air Fee is then collected by Uber as part of Uber’s service fee. If a driver’s application for EV assistance is approved, Uber will pay the driver's EV assistance directly to the relevant approved dealer on behalf of the driver.
It is our understanding that the additional Clean Air Fees charged to riders, and amounts paid to Uber by way of service fee, will be treated for income tax purposes in the same way as the usual fare and service fee. If drivers receive EV assistance, this may affect their taxable income or gains. Please seek advice from your tax advisor.

The EV assistance amount for a Fleet Partner is based upon that Fleet Partner’s recommended Clean Air Fees and those of any drivers employed by the Fleet Partner. Drivers employed by the Fleet Partner cannot apply for EV assistance separately from the Fleet Partner.
A Fleet Partner can apply for EV assistance multiple times to support multiple vehicle upgrades, subject to the terms and conditions. Full details of a Fleet Partner’s eligibility criteria is outlined in the T&Cs.
