Renew your Private Hire Licence in London
Time to renew your Private Hire Licence with TfL? We're here to support you along the way. Renewing it ahead of time means you can continue enjoying the freedom that Uber offers and avoid any break in earnings.
Here's our step-by-step guide to renewing your licence.
Before you get started
Your PCO licence is valid for three years. TfL will send you a renewal pack around four months before the date your licence expires. We recommend you start applying as soon as you receive it, as some renewal applications can take up to eight weeks for TfL to process.
If you do not renew your licence within three months of the expiry date, you will be removed from TfL's system and will need to reapply for your PCO. If you experience a change in circumstances at any point, such as a change of personal details or a medical condition, you should inform TfL as soon as possible.
If you've developed an allergy or a medical condition that may mean you can't take trips with service animals or provide reasonable mobility assistance, which is the law, you should get an exemption from TfL as soon as possible.
Renewal process
Step 1
Your first step is to undertake an enhanced criminal record check by applying for a DBS certificate. The certificate must be obtained through First Advantage group and your application can be started online. For instructions on how to complete, watch the video below.
The DBS update service keeps your DBS certificate up to date. From 26 February 2024, all applicants for a private hire driver's licence must register with and subscribe to the DBS Update Service. TfL will not grant a licence unless you have registered with the Update Service. Once licensed, you must maintain continuous subscription with the Update Service. Detailed guidance on the Update Service and how to register can be found here.
Step 2
If you're over the age of 45, to renew your licence you must pass the Group 2 Medical Standards. To do this, you must print and complete a TPH/204 Medical Declaration form and take it to your GP so that they can sign the form, confirming the information you provided is correct and that you are fit to drive. You can also complete your medical at the Uber London Greenlight Hub through our partnership with DoctorCall
Step 3
Submit a recent photograph of yourself, using the photo standards.
Step 4
Complete TfL's Safeguarding Awareness Training course, which teaches you what to do when there are concerns a child or vulnerable adult is at risk.
Step 5
TfL updated the requirements for PCO applications recently. Therefore, you will need to complete a right-to-work check.
You will also be required to complete a tax check using your Government Gateway ID and take TfL's Safety, Equality and Regulatory Understanding (SERU) test and English-language speaking and listening tests, if you haven't already. This is a requirement for all drivers to pass before renewing their licence.
Step 6
We recommend you apply for your licence renewal online instead of via the post, as it's quicker and saves you £10.
To do so, you'll need to sign in to your existing TfL account on their website. Details of how to do so will be included in the renewal pack, which you'll receive in the post.
Step 7
A renewal application costs £310. You'll need to pay this fee. Finally, you'll need to return your old paper licence within seven days of the expiry date to TfL, as well as your badge.
Once you've applied, you'll be able to track the progress of your application online.
