Our approach to COVID-19
The safety and wellbeing of everyone who uses Uber is at the heart of what we do. We're continuing to expand our response to COVID-19 with new features for our users, support for those who earn on our platform, and partnerships and initiatives that serve our cities.
No Mask, No Ride
To help protect the health and safety of everyone, face coverings or masks are mandatory for anyone riding or driving with Uber (unless exempt). You can learn more about our face covering policy including the exceptions here.
How we’re supporting drivers
We will provide drivers with additional protection and benefits in the event that they catch COVID-19 or need to self-isolate and are unable to work. If you’re a driver, you can learn more here.
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
We’re making masks, sanitiser spray and hand gels available to drivers free of charge. We'll also reimburse drivers up to an additional £25 for other PPE that they buy. If you’re a driver, you can learn more here.
Alternative earnings opportunities
We've partnered with third parties such as Ocado and Adecco to provide alternative earnings opportunities during these difficult times, and we continue to work on further partnerships. If you are a driver, check your inbox for further details.
Lowering fixed costs
We're working with vehicle vendors including Otto, Drover and WeFlex to lower driver vehicle payments during the COVID-19 crisis. We're also working with vehicle insurance providers to lower the fixed cost of vehicle insurance. If you are a driver, you can learn more here.
Free rides for the NHS and Uber Medics
We covered 300,000 free rides and meals for NHS staff, and launched Uber Medics, a new service designed to allow drivers to opt in to support frontline staff during a time when non-essential travel is restricted. If you are an NHS or Care Home worker, or a driver, you can learn more here.
Before every trip we ask riders to make sure they sanitise their hands before entering vehicles, sit in the back, open the window to improve ventilation, and to cover their mouth if they cough or sneeze.
Supporting NHS staff
In the UK & Ireland, Uber has committed to 300,000 free trips & meals to help NHS staff get to and from work, and put dinner on the table when they get home.
Helping restaurants focus on food, not finances
We know that fixed costs for our restaurant partners remain constant, putting their finances front and centre. To help create a more reliable and immediate source of cash flow, even in uncertain times, we’re rolling out a new payment option for restaurants. This new feature will allow restaurants of all sizes to opt in to daily payments on all Uber Eats orders, rather than the typical weekly billing cycle.
Supporting the NHS
The safety and wellbeing of everyone who uses Uber is always our priority. We are committed to supporting public authorities and cities as they work to stem the COVID-19 pandemic.
Important information for drivers and couriers
- Cleaning supplies for your car
We are working to provide drivers and couriers with an option for accessing disinfectants to help them keep their cars clean. Supplies are very limited, so we are prioritising the resources for drivers and couriers in cities with the greatest need.
- ‘Leave at door’ delivery
All orders made via Uber Eats will be left at the door.
- Supporting public health authorities
We have a team available 24/7 to support public health authorities in their response to the pandemic. Working with them, we may temporarily suspend the accounts of riders or drivers confirmed to have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19. We’re also consulting with an epidemiologist to make sure our efforts as a company are grounded in medical advice.
- Support if you’re taken off the road
Any driver or courier who is diagnosed with COVID-19 or asked individually to self-isolate by a public health authority will receive financial assistance for up to 14 days while their account is on hold.
- We're protecting your Uber Pro status
The last thing you should have to worry about is losing your Uber Pro status. We are protecting the current Uber Pro status for all drivers until 30 June. We will reassess the situation and update our policy on this if necessary nearer the time.
- Support if you hire a vehicle
We are working with Otto Car, WeFlex and PCO Rentals to ask them to support drivers in need by reducing the overall cost of their vehicles. This will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact your provider for more information here https://www.uber-vs.com/gb/en/
Health and safety guidance
We’re reminding everyone who uses Uber to follow advice from the NHS. If you’re ill, stay at home and away from others. Wash your hands frequently, and cover your cough or sneeze. For more information, refer to the NHS guidelines.
