How we’re helping to keep you safe
We reimagined door-to-door safety by introducing innovative technology to help ensure that your experience feels positive, inclusive and safe.
Raising the bar on safety
Adaptable technology
We build in-app features to help keep you safe – from GPS tracking that detects if a trip goes unusually off-course, to tools that verify face coverings.
Rider and driver accountability
Before every trip, riders and drivers must confirm that they’ve taken precautions such as wearing a face covering and washing their hands (where required).
Safety integrations
In certain markets, we help manage risk through integrations with Concur Locate and International SOS.
Helping to keep you safe at every turn
Face coverings or masks are required
Riders and drivers are required to wear a face covering or mask to drive or ride in the US, Canada, India and most of Europe and Latin America. Our technology verifies that the driver in those regions is wearing a mask.
Concur Locate and International SOS are integrated
We’ve partnered with powerful employee risk-management and safety-communication solutions that let you check in with your employees quickly.
Every trip is insured
Cover for accidents that happen during a trip apply for all independent partners from the moment of confirming a trip or food delivery request in the Uber app until completion of that request, and for 15 minutes after it has been completed.
Every driver is background checked
Uber aims to conduct a comprehensive review of a prospective partner’s eligibility before their account is activated by reviewing motor vehicle and/or criminal records where available, reliable and legally permissible*.
Providing peace of mind for all
We’re continually working to improve the safety of all the communities we serve: riders, drivers, couriers and businesses.
Ready-to-ride safety checklist
Before every trip, riders must confirm that they’ve taken precautions such as wearing a face covering and washing or sanitising their hands. We also ask that they sit in the back seat.
In-app Safety Toolkit
A dedicated place in the app where riders and drivers can access key safety information easily, reach emergency assistance quickly and share their location.
RideCheck
Using sensors and GPS, RideCheck helps detect if a trip goes unusually off course, if there’s an unexpected long stop, or if a possible crash has occurred, then checks in to help provide support.
Ready-to-drive safety checklist
Before a driver or courier can go online, they will be asked to confirm, using a ‘Go online checklist’, that they’ve taken certain safety measures and are wearing a mask or face covering.
Face covering check technology
Technology will verify that the driver is wearing a face covering or mask by asking them to take an interactive selfie.
Driver screening in the UK and Ireland
All drivers are screened before they begin using Uber – and annually thereafter.* This includes pre-screening and documentation, driving history review, criminal history review, and new offence notifications (where available).
Community Guidelines
Everyone who signs up for an Uber account across all of our apps is expected to treat each other with respect, help keep each other safe and follow the law.
Restaurant food safety
Restaurants are expected to meet all relevant licensing requirements, follow regulations and provide a safe area for order pick-ups.
Contact-free delivery
Uber Eats users can choose ‘Leave at door’ deliveries, and couriers are advised to follow food safety best practices that were developed with guidance from the NHS.
Your business is going places. We’re here to help.
*The amount of time this covers will vary across markets and ranges from 6 months to lifetime, depending on record availability and privacy regulations. Certain criminal records are disqualifying if they are reported to Uber, depending on the time that has elapsed since the conviction. In New York City, driving history reviews are conducted by the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Annual screening processes are dependent on courthouses being open and operational. Due to COVID-19, this may not be the case and recurring checks may be postponed.
