Driving Safety Forward

Your safety is our priority. We never stop working to reduce incidents and set new standards, so you can stay connected and protected every time you ride with us. Because safety never stops.

Helping to keep each other safe during COVID-19

We’re actively monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and are continually working to help keep those who rely on our platform healthy and safe.

Masks are no longer required

As of April 19, 2022, riders and drivers are not required to wear masks when using Uber. However, the CDC still recommends wearing a mask if you have certain personal risk factors and/or high transmission levels in your area.

Remember: many people still feel safer wearing a mask because of personal or family health situations, so please be respectful of their preferences. And if you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always cancel the trip.

Updating our no-front-seat policy

Riders are no longer required to sit in the back seat. However, to give drivers space, we ask that riders only use the front seat if it’s required because of the size of their group.

Thank you for helping take care of one another

We know the pandemic has been difficult. But you’ve continued to go the extra mile to help protect our communities—whether it’s wearing a mask, making space for one another, or giving drivers the respect they deserve. Thank you for that.

It’s still important to take safety precautions while riding, driving, and delivering. So make sure to roll down the windows for extra airflow, sanitize your hands before and after trips or deliveries, and always cover your cough or sneeze.

Designing a safer ride

Safety features are designed into the app, so you can tell your loved ones where you are, and so there’s help if something unexpected happens.* Stay connected and protected when you ride.

Driver Profile

Get to know your driver before you step into their car. You can see their rating, how many trips they've completed, how long they’ve been driving, compliments from previous riders, and more.

Real time ID check

To make sure that registered drivers are the ones driving, a real-time identification check system has been implemented. Drivers are randomly asked to take in real-time a photo of themselves, and the photo is then compared to the one logged on their Uber account.

Phone Number Anonymization

Calls and messages made using the Uber app do not reveal personal phone numbers. Your details are automatically protected.

GPS Tracking

All Uber rides are tracked by GPS from start to finish, so you can follow your ride and see exactly where you’re going.

Share My Trip Centre

Let the people you love know where you are. Choose your Trusted Contacts in the app and set reminders to share your trip details with them.

Safety Centre

Visit the in-app Safety Centre to learn what we're doing to help keep you safe. Just tap the shield icon the next time you take a trip.

Emergency Assistance

Get help fast. Call local emergency services right from the app, wherever you are.

Real Time Call Back

In case of an emergency reported via the "Help" section within the app, our teams call you back in less than 3 minutes.

Client support, 24/7

Whether you have a quick question or an incident to report, it’s easy to get the help you need. Access 24/7 support directly through the app, whenever you need it.

2-Way Ratings

Your feedback matters. The two-way rating system maintains an enjoyable Uber experience and helps keep riders and drivers safe. A consistently low-rating can lead to suspension or deactivation.

RideCheck

Using sensors and GPS data, RideCheck can help detect if a trip has an unexpected long stop. If so, we'll check on you and offer tools to get help.¹

Introducing PIN verification

It ensures you are getting into the right car with the right driver by using a unique PIN. You can choose to opt in to this feature for added peace of mind on every ride (Settings > Verify your rides > Use PIN to verify rides). After opting in, you’ll receive a unique 4-digit PIN whenever you request a ride. Before entering your driver’s vehicle, tell them your PIN; if they are the driver the app matched you with, they’ll be able to start the trip after they enter your PIN into their app.

Drivers must clear several screenings

All potential driver-partners must complete a criminal background screening process before they can accept ride requests through the Uber app.

Driving Hour Limits

To help make roads safer for everyone, Uber automatically locks drivers out of the app when they reach the consecutive driving hours limit. They must then take a substantial break before they can drive again.

Speed Limit Alerts

The Speed Limit Alerts feature flashes visual reminders to help drivers stay at a safe speed.

Vehicle Inspection

In order to drive on the Uber platform, every vehicle must pass an independent annual inspection to verify that it is safe to drive.

Insurance on every trip

Uber partners with leading companies to help protect riders and drivers if anything happens.

Check your ride, every time

Before you hop in, take a second to double-check the app for your driver’s information. Follow these 3 steps to make sure you get into the right car:

Step 1:

Match the license plate number.

Step 2:

Match the car make and model.

Step 3:

Check the driver's photo.

Strengthening our community

Our Community Guidelines were established to keep Uber enjoyable and inclusive for everyone. Any person who doesn’t follow the guidelines can be removed from the platform.

Safer journeys for everyone

Our commitment to safety goes beyond the app. We partner with leading organizations to help make roads safer and our cities stronger.

Listening to a Safety Advisory Board

Uber develops new processes and features with the help of leading experts from the fields of safety and security, women’s safety, civil rights, and road safety.

Partnering with public safety officials

Uber has an investigative team of former law enforcement professionals who offer immediate assistance to public safety officials in active cases.

Supporting disaster-relief efforts

Our team works with government officials and organizations like the Red Cross to support relief efforts on the ground.
