Watch this video for information on the alcohol delivery process.

If the order you’re delivering contains alcohol, your Driver app will prompt you to complete a few additional steps before completing the delivery:

  1. Select who is receiving the order;
  2. Collect a signature from the order recipient using your Driver app;
  3. Check the recipient’s ID to ensure they are 19 years of age or older;
  4. Input the recipient’s birthday into your Driver app; and
  5. Ensure that the recipient is not intoxicated

These additional steps are required by British Columbia law related to the delivery of alcohol. British Columbia law requires that you never delivery alcohol to a person who is under 19 years of age, and/or intoxicated. Failing to complete these steps may result in a violation of your agreement with Uber, which could result in you losing access to your Driver app.

How to handle an intoxicated alcohol recipient

Intoxication

It is against British Columbia law to deliver alcohol to a person that is showing signs of intoxication.

Before completing a delivery that contains alcohol, you must confirm that the recipient is not intoxicated.

Signs of an intoxicated person:

  • Impaired reactions and coordination
  • Stumbling
  • Fumbling for change or ID
  • Slurred speech

If you believe that the person receiving the alcohol delivery is intoxicated, you must not complete the delivery. Please calmly and firmly inform the recipient that local law will not allow you to deliver them alcohol.

Next, indicate in your Driver app that the intended recipient is, or appears to be, intoxicated. Your Driver app will prompt you to start a return trip, and take the delivery back to the retailer. You will be compensated for return trips.

For more information on signs of intoxication, see the ‘Serving It Right’ intoxication guidelines here.

How to refuse an alcohol delivery

British Columbia law requires that alcohol delivery must be refused to anyone who:

  • Cannot provide two pieces of acceptable ID; and/or
  • Is, or appears to be, intoxicated

If the person receiving the alcohol delivery is not 19 or order, or you believe that the person receiving the alcohol delivery is intoxicated, you must not complete the delivery. Please calmly and firmly inform the recipient that local law will not allow you to deliver them alcohol.

Next, indicate in your Driver app that the intended recipient is underage or appears to be intoxicated. Your Driver app will prompt you to start a return trip, and take the delivery back to the retailer. You will be compensated for return trips.

If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, move to a safe place before taking any additional steps.

Foire aux questions

  • What do I do if I have to refuse or otherwise can’t complete an alcohol delivery?

    If an alcohol delivery cannot be completed for any reason, please return all items from the order to the retailer. Indicate the reason that the delivery cannot be completed in your Driver app (e.g. the recipient cannot prove they are over 19, the recipient appears to be intoxicated, the recipient refused to accept the order, etc.). Your Driver app will then prompt you to return the alcohol to the retailer as soon as possible. You will be compensated for the return trip.

  • Do I need to be accredited with Serving it Right in order to deliver alcohol in British Columbia?

    British Columbia law does not require delivery partners to have Serving it Right accreditation in order to delivery alcohol.

  • What do I do if a recipient who has been refused delivery becomes aggressive or violent?

    If a recipient becomes aggressive towards you for any reason, remove yourself from the situation immediately and go to a safe location. If the situation warrants it, call the police once you are in a safe location.

  • How should I deal with alcohol containers that break while I am making a delivery?

    If you notice that any of the alcohol containers you are delivering break or are broken before you reach the drop-off location, end the trip in your Driver app and indicate the reason as ‘Item Damaged’. Your Driver app will then prompt you to call the retailer to notify them of the breakage. You are then required to return the entire order (both damaged and not damaged items) to the retailer. You will not be charged for damaged items.

    If you notice that any of the alcohol containers you are delivering break or are broken once you have reached the drop-off location, tell the order recipient that since there are damaged items in the order, you must return the entire order to the retailer. Please tell the recipient that they will not be charged for the damaged order, and to re-order through the Uber Eats app. Then, end the trip in your Driver app and indicate the reason as ‘Item Damaged’. Your Driver app will then prompt you to call the retailer to notify them of the breakage. You are then required to return the entire order (both damaged and not damaged items) to the retailer. You will not be charged for damaged items.

  • What if the liquor store is closed when a return trip is required?

    You will stop receiving alcohol delivery requests one hour prior to the liquor stores closing in order to help ensure that the store will be open if a return trip is required. If the liquor store is not open, please contact support through your Driver app.

  • Is there a limit on how much alcohol will be included in a single alcohol order?

    Yes, restrictions on how much alcohol is included in a single alcohol order are in place to ensure that all alcohol orders are a manageable weight for delivery.

  • What if the alcohol recipient is different than the person who ordered?

    If the person accepting the delivery is not the intended recipient, please select either ‘Spouse / Housemate’, ‘Doorman’, ‘Concierge’, or ‘Someone Else’, as appropriate. If you select ‘Someone Else, input the first and last name of the individual receiving the delivery in your Driver app. The individual accepting the delivery must be at the delivery address, must not be intoxicated, and must be over the age of 19 in order to complete the delivery. If no one is able to receive the order at the delivery address, select ‘Unable to Deliver’, and you will be prompted to return the order to the store. You will be compensated for the return trip.

  • If I have to refuse an alcohol delivery, will it impact my rating or my trip completion rate?

    No, your rating, acceptance rate, and completion rate will not be affected if you are unable to complete an alcohol delivery due to lack of acceptable identification or intoxication as long as you return the alcohol to the retailer. Once you return the alcohol to the retailer, the trip will be considered completed.

  • How much will I earn for alcohol delivery trips?

    Your earnings for an alcohol delivery trip will be made up of the same components as your earnings for a food delivery trip. You will earn:

    • $2.80 for pick-up
    • $1.40 for drop-off
    • $1.00 per KM from retailer to customer

    If your alcohol delivery requires a return trip, you will earn:

    • $2.80 for pick-up
    • $1.40 for drop-off
    • $1.00 per KM from retailer to customer
    • $1.00 per KM from customer back to retailer
  • What do I do if I do not want to receive alcohol delivery requests?
