Ontario ridesharing requirements

Each city in Ontario has different ridesharing requirements and some cities may require you to visit a Greenlight location before you can receive requests. Read below to learn more about the specific requirements for each city.

Before you hit the road

Requirements to drive in Ontario cities

  • Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 7 years (2012 model year) or newer to drive in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton
    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer to drive elsewhere within the GTA

    Vehicle Inspections:

    • New partners must upload an SSC within 36 days of passing the inspection
    • Existing partners must complete a vehicle inspection annually and upload an SSC within 36 days of passing the inspection

    Driving Eligibility:

    • City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton:

      If your signup city is within the GTA, you will be submitted for licensing once your documents are approved and the requirements above have been met. It will take up to 1 week for your licence to be processed and we'll send you an email you to let you know.

      If your signup city is not within the GTA, please visit a Greenlight location to request access.

    • City of Barrie:

      Read below to learn about the requirements to drive in Barrie.

    • Greater Toronto Area (excluding Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Brampton):

      If you signed up to drive in a different city, you can drive in the GTA (excluding Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Brampton) as long as you meet the above requirements.

    Regulatory Requirements:

    • Snow tires or all-weather tires must installed from December 1 until April 30 the following year for partners driving in Toronto and Mississauga.
    • Local bylaw regulations require all driver partners to display an Uber sticker on their vehicle while driving with Uber in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Brampton.
    • City bylaw regulators may request rides at any time to conduct vehicle and document inspections (read below to learn more).

  • Barrie

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer

    Vehicle Inspections:

    • New partners must upload an SSC within 36 days of passing the inspection.

    • Existing partners must complete a vehicle inspection annually and upload an SSC within 36 days of passing the inspection.

    Driving Eligibility:

    • If your driver's licence address is in Barrie, your vehicle will be submitted for licensing once all documents are approved and the requirements above have been met. It will take up to 2 weeks for your licence to be processed and we'll send you an email you to let you know.

    • If your driver's licence address is not in Barrie, please visit one of our Greenlight location to request access.

    Regulatory Requirements:

    • Local bylaw regulations require all driver partners to display an Uber sticker on their vehicle while driving with Uber in Barrie.

    • City bylaw regulators may request rides at any time to conduct vehicle and document inspections (read below to learn more).

  • Ottawa

    Additional Document Requirements:

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer

    Vehicle Inspections:

    • If your vehicle model is 5 years (2014 model year) or newer, it will require an inspection once per year.
    • If your vehicle model is 6 years (2013 model year) or older, it will require an inspection twice per year (every 6 months).

    Driving Eligibility:

    • If your signup city is Ottawa, you will be able to drive with Uber in Ottawa once you have met all the requirements above.

    • If your signup city is not Ottawa, please visit a Greenlight location to request access.

  • London

    Additional Document Requirements:

    Background Screening:

    • New partners must have a background screening passed within the last 60 days.
    • Existing partners must pass a background screening once a year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 8 years (2011 model year) or newer

    Vehicle Inspections:

    • New partners must have a SSC uploaded within the last 60 days.
    • Existing partners must complete an annual vehicle inspection and upload an SSC after each inspection.

    Driving Eligibility:

    • If your signup city is London, your vehicle will be submitted for licensing once all documents are approved and the requirements above have been met. It will take up to 1 week for your licence to be processed and we'll send you an email you to let you know.

    • If your signup city is not London, please visit a Greenlight location to request access.

    Regulatory Requirements:

    • Local bylaw regulations require all driver partners to display two Uber stickers on their vehicle while driving with Uber in London.

    • City bylaw regulators may request rides at any time to conduct vehicle and document inspections (read below to learn more).

  • Niagara Region

    Background Screening:

    • New partners must have a background screening passed within the last 36 days.
    • Existing partners must pass a background screening once a year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer

    Vehicle inspections:

    • New partners must have a SSC uploaded within the last 36 days.
    • Existing partners must complete an annual vehicle inspection and upload an SSC after each inspection.

    Driving Eligibility:

    • If your signup city is Niagara Region, your vehicle will be submitted for licensing once all documents are approved and the requirements above have been met. It will take up to 2 weeks for your licence to be processed and we'll send you an email you to let you know.

    • If your signup city is not Niagara Region, please visit a Greenlight location to request access.

    Regulatory Requirements:

    • Local bylaw regulations require all driver partners to display two Uber stickers on their vehicle while driving with Uber in Niagara Region.
    • City bylaw regulators may request rides at any time to conduct vehicle and document inspections (read below to learn more).
    • To drive with Uber in the Niagara Region, driver-partners must have a Niagara Region TNC driver's licence issued by the Niagara Region Police.

  • Kitchener-Waterloo

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer

    Vehicle inspections:

    • New and existing partners must complete an annual vehicle inspection and upload an SSC after each inspection.

    Driving Eligibility:

    • If your signup city is Kitchener-Waterloo, your vehicle will be submitted for licensing once all documents are approved and the requirements above have been met. It will take up to 3 days for your licence to be processed and we'll send you an email you to let you know.

    • If your signup city is not Kitchener-Waterloo, please visit a Greenlight location to request access.

    Regulatory Requirements:

    • Local bylaw regulations require all driver partners to display the Uber sticker on their vehicle while driving with Uber in Kitchener-Waterloo.

    • City bylaw regulators may request rides at any time to conduct vehicle and document inspections (read below to learn more).

  • Hamilton

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 9 years (2010 model year) or newer

    Vehicle Inspections:

    • New and existing partners must complete an annual vehicle inspection and upload an SSC after each inspection.

    Driving Eligibility:

    • Partners in Ontario can drive in Hamilton as long as the above requirements are met.

  • Kingston

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer

    Vehicle Inspections:

    Driving Eligibility:

    • Partners in Ontario can drive in Kingston as long as the above requirements are met.

  • Windsor

    Background Screening:

    • New and existing partners must have a background screening passed within the last calendar year.

    Vehicle Requirements:

    • 10 years (2009 model year) or newer

    Vehicle Inspections:

    • New and existing partners must complete an annual vehicle inspection and upload an SSC after each inspection.

    Driving Eligibility:

    • Partners in Ontario can drive in Windsor as long as the above requirements are met.

Bylaw inspections

Documents to keep in your car

City bylaw regulators may request rides at any time to conduct vehicle and document inspections.

Be sure to keep the following documents in your vehicle when driving with Uber:

  1. Driver’s Licence
  2. Vehicle Registration
  3. Proof of Insurance
  4. Safety Standards Certificate (SSC)

Also, make sure to have any required Uber sticker(s) placed on your vehicle.

Ontario documents

What is required

The following documents are required across all Ontario cities. However, there may be additional documents required for certain cities.

Ontario Driver's licenceMust be 21+ years of age. Must be a full G license or equivalent (G1 and G2 not accepted).
Canadian Proof of WorkCanadian passports, birth certificates, citizenship cards, residency cards and work permits. Cannot be expired.
Ontario Vehicle InsuranceYour name must be visible on the vehicle insurance pink slip. If you're a secondary driver, include a photo of the full policy document with your name on it.
Ontario Vehicle RegistrationBoth sides of the registration are required. Must have 4 doors. Cannot be rebuilt or salvaged. Good condition with no cosmetic damage. No commercial branding. You are not required to own the vehicle.
Ontario Safety Standards Certificate (SSC)All vehicles must pass a safety inspection and receive a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC). See above for the specific SSC requirements for each city.
