Kick off your summer with these fun events in Cape Town

November 15, 2018 / South Africa

There’s no time like summertime in the Mother City. Everyone’s leaving work a little early to go for a stroll on the beach, bars and restaurants are packed every night and the smell of neighbourhood braais fills the air over the weekend. There are endless great things to do in Cape Town during summer, such as enjoying the natural beauty surrounding the city or attending one of the season’s hottest events with your friends.

The only downside to summer in Cape Town is the crowds. That’s why, this holiday season, grab an Uber instead of taking out your car and save yourself the frustration of finding parking and being the designated driver. Let your driver focus on the road, while you and your friends enjoy your summer playlist and the endless sunshine.

Music lovers should already know what’s on in Cape Town this season with the great lineup of local artists, and Ellerman Sessions mixes music with food, making for an irresistible event. Check out Vusi Mahlasela while famous chefs prepare delicious meals for you in Bantry Bay, one of the most beautiful seaside suburbs of the city.

Beer drinkers, rejoice, for the Cape Town Festival of Beer is back for its 9th year running and you’re bound to see plenty of innovative and delicious craft brews from local businesses. It’s a great day out to be shared with friends, after which you might like to explore the Mother City’s buzzing nightlife scene.

Or, if you’re more of a wine connoisseur,  then check out Tuning the Vine festival, held right in the city center, in Bree Street. Food, fine wines and live music will accompany you and your friends soaking in Cape Town’s splendour until the early hours. Don’t forget to stay safe and grab an Uber to get home if you’ve been drinking.

One of the most original and quirky activities in Cape Town this summer is the first Playtopia: Indie Games and Interactive Art Festival. You don’t have to be a gamer to appreciate the talent of local and international game designers and digital artists, as well as plenty of food, drinks and music.

Another hot “topia” on this season’s calendar is the Streetopia Charity Street Festival, held in Observatory and funded by various NGOs and charities. This is your chance to give back to the community – come along with friends and family and sign up to help out those less privileged than you in your neighbourhood.

Finally, if you’re looking to party all night, check out the Mother City Queer Project, a huge party held on 15th December at Cape Town Town Hall to support the LGBTQ+ community in South Africa. Since 1994 when Nelson Mandela included „freedom of sexual orientation“ in the South African Constitution, the party has run annually with a different theme. Whilst full details have not been announced yet, get ready for a fun occasion to dress up, support your community and dance the night away.

Enjoy the parties and foodie and cultural events in Cape Town this summer. And don’t forget to rely on Uber to sort out getting you from A to B so you can focus on the summer breeze and sunshine.
