At Uber, we strive to create a culture of belonging where our team can feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work, and where success is driven by talent, not identity. To go anywhere and get anything requires a fundamental level of freedom and protection that LGBTQIA+ people are not always granted. Uber is committed to changing the way the world moves so that everyone can Move With Pride.
This month and every month, our Pride at Uber ERG is taking action to build a safer, more accepting world for our LGBTQIA+ teammates, drivers, merchants, and riders. To learn more, we sat down with a few members of our ERG leading change across Uber and our community.
Launching a Move with Pride Campaign to support LGBTQIA+ NGOs
In alignment with Uber’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and community engagement, Joao, Strategic Projects Lead and Product Co-Lead for our Pride ERG, and Jackson Hughes, Regional Operations Manager, launched a Move with Pride campaign. “This initiative leverages the month of Pride to support LGBTQIA+ non-governmental organizations (NGOs) through user donations facilitated directly through the Uber app,” they share.
The campaign will run in New York City and Mexico City at different points of the month in partnership with the NGOs ACLU and Casa Frida.
“This campaign not only supports an important community but also aligns with our inclusivity and corporate responsibility goals, contributing to the portfolio of initiatives Uber has taken over the years, for our employees and customers that utilize the platform – Drivers, Couriers, Shoppers, Merchants, Consumers.”
The campaign originated from a brainstorming session focused on enhancing our Pride initiatives. “It brought together diverse teams, including DEI, Social Impact, Brand, Product, Legal, Compliance, Local Operations, Policy, and Communications, all led by the dedicated members of our Pride ERG. Their passion and collaboration have been instrumental in bringing this campaign to life.”
Empowering conversations: Pride at Uber in Mexico and ADIL partner to foster LGBTQIA+ inclusion
Safe spaces to share one’s authentic thoughts and get support can make all the difference. That’s why our Mexico Pride ERG chapter is partnering with ADIL, a prominent organization in Mexico that advocates for inclusion and respect for everyone in the workplace, to host thoughtful discussions on important topics to the community starting this month and running through the rest of the year.
Led by Pride at Uber Mexico Co-Leads Ezequiel (Cheke), Public Policy Manager, and Hector, Executive Assistant Business Partner, the series will host informed conversations on key topics—from the significance of creating active allies for the LGBTQIA+ community, and the origins of the LGBTQIA+ movement and its present challenges, to the importance of establishing safe spaces that allow everyone to reach their full potential.
The idea was born out of the ERG’s goal of bringing closer key resources and personal stories and educating allies who will stand next to our LGBTQIA+ community. Sessions will have immediate and long-term impact:
“Our focus is on creating inclusive spaces where everyone can be their authentic selves and feel valued. The series will encourage open dialogues and discussions, helping us to boost our inclusive culture, where diversity is celebrated and everyone feels empowered to reach their full potential, enhancing the overall well-being and productivity of the Uber team.”
Building a Pride community at Uber in Poland
“There is much work to be done in our ERG community in Poland regionally,” shares Mieczysław, Safety Investigations Specialist and Pride Country Lead, based in Krakow.
Although the “LGBTQIA+ situation in Poland is challenging, marked by significant social and political opposition,” Mieczysław knew it was critical to foster a supportive community within Uber in the country. “This is a great challenge and an opportunity to create a community that can rely on each other and where everyone feels accepted.”
Today, Mieczysław is relentlessly pushing to build a community “where everyone feels accepted, welcome and respected” and “a space where everyone can ask for help, share their thoughts and feel understood.”
“Uber creates a platform for everyone, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or background. It creates a place where everyone is treated with the utmost respect and where everyone should feel at home,” he shares. “Diversity builds strength. The same is happening among employees. We want to build a space of acceptance, support, and a sense of community. We want to celebrate diversity, equality, and each individual.”
Launching Pride at Uber in India: navigating cultural sensitivities to build a strong, inclusive community
When it comes to launching a new Pride at Uber ERG chapter in India, “building awareness and gathering support requires navigating cultural sensitivities and overcoming potential resistance” says Sayani, Senior Team Lead and APAC Pride ERG Co-Chair. But creating a safe, confidential space is essential for success:
“Our Pride ERG remains a powerful platform for letting LGBTQIA+ colleagues and allies know that they are not only warmly welcomed to bring their authentic selves to work, but that we believe we are a better, stronger and more innovative team when they do,” shares Angie, Program Specialist and APAC Pride at Uber Co-Chair.
Still in the early stages, the newly launched Pride at Uber India ERG chapter will build a strong community for members across the country by hosting inclusive events, educational workshops, and support groups that help everyone feel connected and understood. “By using virtual platforms, we’ll make sure employees from all corners of the country can join in and feel included. Plus, we’ll partner with external LGBTQIA+ organizations to advocate for inclusive policies and create a supportive network that reaches far and wide,” explains Sayani.
So far, so good. “Pride is one of the most active ERGs in India. Our Hyderabad COE has the most lively members!”
