This week is Māori Language Week (10 – 16 September), a celebration of one of Aotearoa’s official languages to help raise awareness and encourage more people to use Te Reo in their daily lives.

We’re happy to announce that Māori phrases will be incorporated into the Uber and Uber Eats apps every day of the week, to encourage users, driver- and delivery-partners to kōrero using Te Reo and practise their skills during te wiki o te Reo Māori.

Working directly with the Māori Language Commission, we’ve created a series of words and phrases that will appear on the Uber applications – ranging from a simple ‘Kia ora!’ to phrases like “Ko wai tō ingoa?” – “What is your name?”

The Māori Language Commission is enthusiastic about Uber’s plans because it is advocating that people ‘learn a little and use a little – ahakoa iti, ākona, kōrerotia’.

Andy Bowie, New Zealand Country Manager, Uber Eats says: “We’re happy to support the Māori Language Commission in their mission to encourage more people to speak Te Reo.

“If you catch an Uber or order a meal from Uber Eats between Monday 10 September and Sunday 16 September, we hope you will take the chance to practise your Māori pronunciation at the same time.”
