About the Role

 

 

The ATG Proving Ground Manager is the owner of all our test track testing. In this role, the person must ensure that our in-house test facilities are able to support all of ATG's testing needs safely and efficiently.

What You’ll Do
 
  • As the Proving Ground Testing Manager, you will: 

    • Manage and execute the testing operations management at Uber ATG’s Pittsburgh Proving Grounds.
    • Work closely, in a collaborative method, with Finance BPs, HR BPs, EHS, Ops Product, Testing Productivity TPMs, Operational Performance Analysis Lead and Operational Safety Program Manager to define actions and execute to improve testing efficiency by increasing throughput of existing resources (people, places and cars) and reducing under utilized resources. 
    • Serve as the single point of contact for all internal and external proving ground customers to manage their expectations. 
    • Onboard and manage relationships with third party test sites. 
    • Drive a 'Safety First” culture to ensure the highest level of knowledge and compliance are achieved without hindering operational success. 
    • Serve as Uber’s Primary Member to the International Committee for Proving Ground Safety
    • SE&T Primary interface with Operational Safety and Training to provide training requirements and resources for in-house and external driver training.
    • Lead and direct the responsibilities of ATG Mission Managers, Technicians, Specialists and Engineers to maximize all team-based goals and objectives.
    • Strategize and direct operations management, ensuring the on-time completion of all business and testing objectives within the assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Identify and make recommendations for Proving Grounds continual improvements . Analyze resource requirements to plan and assess the feasibility of new projects for cost, safety, timing and value.
    • Conduct supervisory and leadership responsibilities in accordance with Uber’s policies and applicable laws. These will include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, setting goals, managing expectations, appraising performance/competence, rewarding and disciplining associates, addressing complaints and resolving any day-to-day issues.
    • Understand the confidentiality of certain Proving Grounds activities and ensure protection of Uber's and OEM's Intellectual Property.
    • Lead Demos and VIP events at the Proving Grounds.
    • Committed to - and responsible for - the understanding of, adherence, and maintenance of all applicable internal and external quality system standards and accreditations. Act as Local Management Rep for all external audits. Conduct internal audits as required . Arrange/provide all necessary training for Proving Grounds employees.
    • Create, monitor, revise and evaluate all applicable Proving Grounds systems. Manage document control.
    • Work with Engineering, Facilities, Finance, Legal, Policy, EHS, Community Leaders and others to ensure successful completion of ATG’s next proving ground. 
    • Implement full vehicle simulators for training and UX studies. 

     

 

What You’ll Need
 
  • 15 years of relevant experience in product testing and/or operations in a large corporate setting and small, skunk works, startups. 
  • Minimum 5 years managing managers of hourly and salaried technical employees. 
    • Successful experience identifying and recruiting talent and developing them into highly successful new managers.
  • BS minimum (MS/ME preferred) degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.  
  • MBA preferred with an emphasis or experience in operations and process. 
  • Extensive experience creating and operating best-in-class product testing and product operations from other companies and industries in the technology and transportation products (ex. Aerospace and Automotive).
  • Multiple years of demonstrated experience and mastery (and certifications) in Six Sigma, Lean Production Systems, Quality Management System (QMS), Financial Analysis and Forecasting, Business Process Reengineering, Total Quality Management, Kansei Engineering, Taguchi Methods, A3, Push-Pull, Takt Time Analysis and Complex Flow Production. 
  • Fluency or deep competency in: 
    • Interactions between mechanical, electrical, and software components in complex electromechanical systems 
    • System architecture diagrams, concept of operations documents, ICDs, APIs, requirements management processes, and system verification plans 
    • Diverse testing methods including simulation, HIL, laboratory, track, and field testing 
    • Deep diving into technical details and surfacing to higher level strategy 
    • Simply communicating complex ideas to peers, management, and customers 
    • Written and verbal communication (including public speaking and external partner discussions with deference to intellectual property and business relationship considerations) 
  • Previous experience and demonstrated success: 
    • Leading testing and operations teams (engineers, technicians, analysts, etc) 
    • Building and managing large, cross functional, role distributed teams.
    • Taking a complex system from initial research and development, to small scale prototypes, to large scale production in a V+V driven process. 
    • Collaborating with, influencing, and motivating people across a broad variety of job functions through relationships and emotional intelligence.
    • Effective adaptation of standard systems engineering processes to unique new technology applications.
    • Ability to move fast and the confidence to blaze a trail where industry best practices come up short.
  • Familiarity with: 
    • Full Vehicle Simulators 
    • Multiple planning and development methods including Waterfall, Agile, Scrum, Continuous Integration, and V-Model 
    • Debugging and analyzing failures in complex electromechanical systems 
    • Vehicle electronics and networking (CAN, Flexray, Ethernet, PCBAs), manufacturing (CNC machining, 3D printing, casting, SMT, ICT), and robotics or self-driving technology (sensors, computing, algorithms, actuators) 
    • Sophisticated, safety-critical hardware and software within automotive or another industry (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical, transportation) 
    • Automotive standards such as ISO 26262, SPICE, AEC-Q100, etc 

 

About the Team

 

The Systems Engineering & Testing team at UATG is charged with answering, “What does the system need to do, how should we build it, and how is it performing?” We are the cross-functional, technical interface between Product, Safety, Hardware, Software, and Operations groups. Our goal is to ensure unbiased, holistic, and cross-functional design that optimizes across domains. We do this by analyzing data on where our vehicles operate, generating scenario and capability focused requirements with performance criteria, and collaborating closely with key stakeholders and subject matter experts throughout the organization to architect solutions. To evaluate our performance, we develop and execute a comprehensive strategy that combines simulation, laboratory / HIL, closed track, and open road testing. Finally, we believe in collaborating with and adapting industry best practices while providing continuous delivery and improvement of our process, tools, and artifacts as we learn more about this evolving technology and industry.
