The Pearl of the Indian Ocean – Sri Lanka has many things to offer everyone. With a rich culture that dates back over 2500 years, Sri Lanka is marked for its vibrant Buddhist celebrations.
The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the most glamorous religious festivals in Sri Lanka that is associated with the temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – ‘Sri Dalada Maligawa’.
This ‘Perahera’ (Procession) is held annually as a homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic and consists of many traditional dance performances including, whip-crackers, fireball dancers, ‘Hewisi’ drummers in addition to the beautifully dressed majestic elephants that becomes a highlight for the audience. Eye-catching performances of the Kandian dancers is a must see at this event.
The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days. It takes place in July or August according to the dates of the full moon.
The dates for 2018 are;
- 16th August 2018 – 20th August 2018 : Kumbal Perahera
- 21st August 2018 – 25th August 2018 : Randoli Perahera
- 26th Aug 2018 – Day Perahera
