Selfies to enhance safety

June 28, 2017 / Kenya

Technology is a powerful tool. It makes our lives convenient and improves safety in ways we thought not possible before. We are constantly looking at ways to better our technology to offer adaptable and advance solutions. We are excited to announce our latest safety update, the  Real-Time ID Check, an intelligent new safety feature technology which we are launching in Kenya.

What could be more amazing than the potential for products and features to prevent issues before they even happen? Real-Time ID Check makes this possible as it prompts drivers to share a selfie from time to time before going online to ensure the driver using the app matches the account we have on file. This protects drivers from fraud, theft and risks as only the registered driver-partner can use the app.

It doesn’t stop there! Riders are also protected, as it assures that when they are picked up, the right person is behind the wheel. As our technology and insights continue to evolve, so will the way riders and driver-partners who use the app.

How it works:

  • Drivers are asked periodically to take a selfie in the Uber app before they accept rides.
  • We then compare this photo to the one already on file with the account.
  • If the two photos don’t match, the account is temporarily blocked while we look into the situation.

It’s important to us that this extra security feature does not inconvenience driver-partners. For this reason, we focused on making the user experience as simple as possible from the beginning of the project, testing it on driver-partners around the world to ensure it is a simple, effective and a quick experience.

We continue to explore technologies that keep riders and drivers safe and secure. Innovation never stops.
