Product and Design, Advanced Technologies Group in Pittsburgh, PA

At Uber, we ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion. We take on big problems to help drivers, riders, delivery partners, and eaters get moving in more than 600 cities around the world.

At Uber, we believe technology has the power to make transportation more efficient, accessible, and safer than ever before. Self-driving technology has the potential to make these benefits an everyday reality for our customers, but it’s not going to happen overnight.  Building best-in-class self-driving technology will take time, and safety is our priority every step of the way. Operating inclusively and transparently, while displaying responsible behavior in a structured development are critical to safety. We at ATG seek candidates who will role model these values.

We welcome people from all backgrounds who seek the opportunity to help build a future where everyone and everything can move independently. If you have the curiosity, passion, and collaborative spirit, work with us, and let’s move the world forward, together.

About the Job

At ATG, we are at the forefront of a nascent industry developing self-driving vehicles. We are looking for experienced, senior software product managers for the Simulation and Testing team. This team is responsible for outcomes related to the development lifecycle for the software that runs our self-driving vehicles. We are defining the strategy, roadmap and requirements for the technologies that enable our autonomy and systems engineers to safely and effectively advance the frontier of autonomous vehicle development. You will work closely with a talented group of engineers and designers to accomplish this mission.

The Simulation and Testing team supports a broad spectrum of tools and platforms developed in-house for developing and experimenting with code, unit testing, and formal systems testing. Tools include virtual and log simulation systems, test management and tracking systems, and performance evaluation systems.

What You'll Do

  • Develop a deep understanding of autonomy engineering goals -- including the respective roles of perception, prediction and motion planning engineers.
  • Develop a deep understanding of systems engineering and testing goals -- including the roles of simulation and offline testing vs track and road testing.
  • Develop deep user empathy for the diverse types of users you will be empowering -- from Artificial Intelligence PhDs to track testing operators.
  • Understand how your end users would like to work to achieve their respective goals, and the tools and processes they will need to be successful.
  • Act as a strong advocate for your end-users’ expressed needs while balancing the organization’s overarching goals with respect to self-driving vehicle development.
  • Be able to clearly and concisely explain user needs -- not just the “whats” but also the “whys.”
  • Define and focus the organization on the right outcomes and metrics.
  • Manage diverse sets of stakeholders with complex needs; be able to push back when needed to drive the right outcomes.
  • Develop a clear vision, strategy and roadmap for the product suite that best addresses user needs and furthers ATG’s business goals.
  • Be “knee deep” in the technical details and document the product vision through PRDs and user stories, and continue to update those documents throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Work closely with your engineering partners and end-users to iterate requirements and priorities, facilitate discussions to achieve compromises where trade-offs are required, and achieve broad consensus on product direction.
  • Communicate the vision, strategy, and roadmap to all stakeholders.
  • Become an expert on the autonomous vehicles space broadly and on simulation and testing specifically; understand the industry landscape and develop a point of view of future trends and potential partners.

What You'll Need

  • 5+ of product management experience and 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience learning new, highly technical domains.
  • Experience building products from concept stage.
  • Experience building complex, distributed systems to enable enterprise workflows.
  • Truth-seeking and highly analytical mindset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to persuade and lead.
  • Ability to define and then track the metrics that measure progress and success.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams of engineers, designers and embedded customer representatives.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to take risks and adapt.

This position will be based in Pittsburgh with occasional travel to San Francisco.
