About the Role


Uber is changing the world, and the Uber Legal Team is proud to be part of that. The Platforms and Services legal team helps Uber creatively discover the Power of the Platform, and find the full potential of our machine learning and AI initiatives. We are a highly collaborative team that is integrating deeply with its clients to provide innovative solutions. We’re looking for exceptional legal professionals to join our legal team in San Francisco. This is a cross functional role, working across Uber’s platforms and services, and with multiple PMs and engineers on a wide array of projects, across the entire Uber ecosystem of business units and operations.


General background on Role/Team

  • This team will interact with product and engineering teams in support of the core platforms and services that underpin Uber’s business units.  Team members are leading experts in the operation of Uber’s platform and related services, and will be focused on the interplay of those platforms and services with issues such as software development and licensing, intellectual property, privacy, information security, machine learning and AI.  
  • Each person will have relationships directly with clients, have a responsibility to make sure all legal issues from that client are being resolved - whether by them or bring in other members of the wider Uber legal team.
  • This role will serve as part generalist, part specialist, part project manager - make sure client is getting answers they need.
  • This role and team will face a diversity of complicated legal issues
  • This team will require a diversity of legal skill-sets and expertise, so the team as a whole can handle most issues from clients itself
  • This role and team will require a high comfort level in handling a variety of legal matters

What You’ll Do 

  • Serve as a front-line attorney leading the Platform and Services team. This leader will guide the development and support of a team of attorneys who are engaged with complex, challenging question pertaining to a platform supporting multiple lines of business. You will advise on legal issues related to product development, licensing and commercial transactions. You will support a dynamic organization of product managers, software and hardware engineers, designers, deal makers, and operations specialists who are responsible for bringing the products of the future to reality.
  • Find and resolve wide-ranging legal issues relating to the business, including issues such as: transactional and commercial needs, licensing, litigation risk, data privacy and protection, APIs and data sharing, product design, human experience, and consumer protection. You will work directly with business clients to provide on-the-ground support and identify potential legal issues.
  • Act as a legal generalist while providing specialist support to clients and legal members in selected areas of expertise. You will provide legal support to your clients by resolving matters directly, working with other Products and Services team members, and collaborating with members of the larger legal team.
  • Provide specialised support to the Platforms and Services team members and to clients regarding legal subjects within your personal expertise. For example, this Platforms and Services team member could preferably provide advice in one of the following subject areas:
  • Review global products, features, and initiatives to assess legal compliance across multiple jurisdictions, from the early stages of product development through launch.


What You’ll Need

  • J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state is required
  • Twelve (12+) years of legal experience in a combination of law firm and in-house settings
  • Experience support complex product platforms, designing and implementing systems for developer and user communities.
  • Experience with reviewing, drafting and negotiating a variety of technology and other complex commercial transactions;
  • Experience with machine learning and AI;
  • Experience working for an engineering-driven technology company
  • Must be confident, collaborative, and able to operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated business aptitude and ability to move quickly
  • Appetite for being a key player in a rapidly growing company
  • Genuine interest in new technologies
  • Bonus points for a technical background and a willingness to get into the weeds with engineers and other clients!
  • History of driving efficient and strategic use of resources, including technical groups, in-house counsel, vendors, and outside counsel
  • Global perspective with experience in matters involving multiple regions or legal regimens
  • Flexibility to perform in nimble, and rapidly changing and growing environments
  • Adept at identifying and scaling routine business operations
  • Inquisitiveness, along with the ability to spot issues, get to the heart of a matter, and articulate plans to address
  • Strong communication skills and demonstrated experience working with business leaders
  • Ability to present information/complex legal matters clearly, and concisely
  • Collaborative approach with both business and legal groups, with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others
