About the Role


The Data Science Operations Manager role helps solve the most challenging problems related to Uber's ambitious and rapidly expanding on-demand delivery business: Uber Eats. These fascinating problems include personalized search and recommendation for restaurants and dishes, travel and food preparation time prediction, text mining and natural language processing, demand and supply forecasting, growth and spend optimization, dynamic pricing, dispatch and routing optimization, and many more. To solve these problems, data scientists leverage unique data sources diverse in both geographical and temporal dimensions and in both structured (data from app sessions, trips, etc.) and unstructured (menu descriptions, food photos, support contacts, etc.) forms.


We are looking for people with advanced quantitative degrees who are comfortable enough with research methodologies that they can address abstract business and product problems with extreme precision, and who have the enthusiasm and initiative necessary to deliver those answers at Uber's fast pace. You should also have demonstrable programming skills and be comfortable with engineering development process.

What You’ll Do


  • Support teams to solve complex and ambiguous problems, often requiring a data-driven approach to gather insights and frame trade-offs (business, financial, policy, legal, etc.) to support decision-making
  • Develop & Optimize Processes - Scale new and existing processes to allow the business to efficiently operate and realize growth; analyze the business to track and improve metrics and profitability
  • Analytics - Analysis of driver, restaurant, and customer metrics to properly allocate supply, guide incentive programs, and ensure high-quality experiences on the Uber system
  • Strategy - Choose which projects the team should prioritize, and set a timeline to reach goals quickly
  • Product Improvement - Proactively search for new features which could improve a seamless driver, customer, and restaurant experience
  • Be fast, resourceful, and take initiative. Take ownership of Uber Eats growth in your city and do everything you can to support and enhance the quality of our services


What You’ll Need


  • A minimum of 2 years industry experience, and prior research, data science modeling, or engineering experience in the aforementioned domains but we will consider candidates with less experience if they meet our other requirements
  • Master's or PhD degree focused on AI & Machine Learning, Analytics, Statistics, Operations Research, Economics, or similar.
  • Superb quantitative background
  • Familiarity with technical tools for analysis - Python (with Pandas, etc.), R, SQL, etc.
  • Research mindset with bias towards action - able to structure a project from idea to experimentation to prototype to implementation
  • Passionate and attentive self-starters, great communicators, amazing follow-through - you have a great work ethic and love the responsibility of being held accountable for the results
  • Professional proficiency in English & Spanish


Bonus Points If

  • Previous software engineering background a plus
