About the Role

As an Engineering Manager, you will be tasked with shaping the future direction of Uber’s IT Engineering – Productivity Tools, our own suite of enterprise products. Our mission is to enhance Uber’s speed, reliability and worker happiness by building tools, integrations and platforms for internal use.

As an engineering leader, you’ll be instrumental in hiring, mentoring and inspiring a healthy team. You’ll guide the technical growth of other engineers and establish the course for how Uber builds reliable and innovative tools. In short, you’ll be making a massive impact on the world of transportation from within - by engineering the backbone for a world class Uber work experience.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and grow a strong engineering team responsible for our next generation productivity tools platform.
  • Ideate and create innovate features that enhance the quality and overall performance of existing internal products.
  • Build Uber’s provisioning automation, access management and auditing platform to ensure employees and contractors have exactly the tools they need, when they need them.
  • Build Uber’s Identity Governance & Administration platform
  • Use machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict and surface access provisions, identify any internal security threats and misuse of access.
  • Improve the ease and speed with which enterprise integrations can be planned, coded and monitored by developing a secure, maintainable, easy-to-use integration platform that is deeply connected to the rest of Uber’s microservice ecosystem.
  • Use machine learning (ML) and other search technology to improve the quality of Uber’s federated search results. Streamline the way data source owners can self-service the onboarding and customization of the search experience for their content.

What You’ll Need

  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience as a manager and overall 10+ years of experience in building distributed, scalable, highly available, and robust services and web applications.
  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong belief and expertise in Agile SCRUM methodology
  • A passion for continuous improvement of yourself, your technology and the capabilities of those around you.
  • Ability to contribute, influence and drive backend platform Initiatives that can serve multiple product lines using multi-tenant architectures and microservices principles.
  • You are comfortable jamming on complex architecture and design principles with senior engineers.
  • Bias for action. You believe that speed and quality aren’t mutually exclusive. You’ve shown good judgement about shipping as fast as possible while still making sure that products are built in a sustainable, responsible way.
  • Mentorship/ Guidance. You know that the most important part of your job is setting the team up for success. Through mentoring, coaching, and reviewing, you help other engineers make sound architectural decisions, improve their code quality, and get out of their comfort zone.
  • You care tremendously about keeping the Uber experience consistent for users and strive to make any issues invisible to riders. You hold yourself personally accountable, jumping in and taking ownership of problems that might not even be in your team’s scope.
  • Hiring know-how. You’re a thoughtful interviewer who constantly raises the bar for excellence. You believe that what seems amazing one day becomes the norm the next day, and that each new hire should significantly improve the team. You can articulate the team’s challenges and growth opportunities to a potential candidate.
  • Strategic mindset. You're comfortable thinking a few steps ahead of where the team is at now.

Bonus Points If

  • Experience with Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, Algorithmic Complexity, Data mining, Pricing, Optimization
  • Prior experience working in or with Identity and Access Management Systems, Security Access Manager, Identity Governance & Administration, Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • Prior experience working on products like Active Directory, OneLogin, Tivoli, Saviynt
  • Prior experience working on global projects, or in an international setting
