Uber is committed to ensuring riders have a safe, reliable and hassle-free way to move around their city. Sometimes we see such high demand that the number of available cars gets tight. During this time, dynamic pricing will automatically go into effect to encourage more drivers to get out on the road and help ensure users always have a ride when they need it most. As demand goes down and more cars free up, the rates will go back to normal.
HOW ARE USERS NOTIFIED ABOUT SURGE PRICING?
We’ll always notify users in BIG, BOLD print if surge pricing is in effect and if the fare exceeds two times the normal rate, a multi-step confirmation screen appears and requires the rider to type in the price multiple to accept the higher fare. Users can also estimate the fare before requesting a ride by simply entering pick up and drop off locations in the app. If dynamic pricing is in effect, the quoted fare will take the current rates into account.
User can also choose to be notified when prices drop through our in-app “Surge Drop” feature. User will therefore receive a notification when prices go back to normal. When dynamic pricing is in effect, we encourage you to check our other vehicle options (like uberTAXI) or to use our in-app feature “Fare Split” to split the cost of the ride with family or friends.
