Pickups at Melbourne Airport
Before you can start receiving trip requests from the Airport, you’ll need to accept the Melbourne Airport Agreed Method of Operation. Driver-partners will receive a notification via the Uber Driver app with more information.
Uber Premium registration
Additionally, driver-partners accepting Uber Premium trips at the airport must obtain access to the VHA area. Driver-partners can register by following the steps on the Melbourne Airport website.

How to accept trips
Pickups at Melbourne Airport
1. Enter the virtual queue
To place yourself in the airport queue, head to the Uber holding bay. The holding bay is the only location where driver-partners can receive trip requests.
2. Accept a trip request and head to the pickup area
Once you are at the front of the queue, you will receive the next available trip request. In order to meet your rider, follow the navigation to the appropriate pickup location.
Pickup locations will vary depending on which product your rider has requested and which terminal your rider has requested from.
Uber Premium: Riders will be able to enjoy being picked up from the VHA area - this is the same pickup area used by Uber Black and hire cars. Remember, Uber Premium driver-partners must be registered with Melbourne Airport; to do this, see the Registration section above.
All Other Products: For riders at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, there is a designated Uber pick up area located in Lane 3 between the bus pickup and short term car park. For riders at Terminal 4, there is a designated pickup area located in the Transport Hub (Level 1).
3. Locate your rider and exit the airport
Once your rider is in your car, you can begin the trip just as you normally would, following the signs to exit the airport.

Important things to note
Uber holding bay
A driver-partner’s wait time in the Uber holding bay resets after:
- Rejecting a trip request
- Ending or cancelling a trip
- Going offline
A driver-partner’s wait time in a zone is NOT reset when:
- A rider cancels - return to the Uber holding bay in order to receive the next trip request.
The rider app advises riders to only request once they’ve exited the terminal, so it’s unlikely you’ll need to wait long.
How does short trip protection work?
Now if you get a short-distance trip* from MEL, we'll hold your spot for 12 hours, so that you can return to the same virtual queue and get another trip quickly. If a trip is eligible for short trip protection, we'll let you know in the app before you accept the trip.
*To be eligible for short trip protection, you must be waiting in an airport queue for at least 15 minutes. Short trip protection is valid for 12 hours at the same virtual queue and remains in place even if you go offline or do other trips before returning to the airport's queue. Airport short trip protection distance radius is subject to change.
UberX, Comfort, XL and Assist pickups
In order to receive pick-up requests, you must be registered for, and agree to, the Melbourne Airport Agreed Method of Operation (Agreement).
Driver-partners will receive a notification via the Uber Driver app with more information on how to register. When your account has been activated to receive airport trip requests, you can join the ‘virtual queue’ at Melbourne Airport by heading to the Uber holding bay, just off Airport Drive.
Uber Premium pickups
In order to receive pick-up requests, you must be registered for VHA access. If you haven’t already, you can register by following the steps here.
Uber Premium pickups will occur at the VHA area. If you accept an Uber Premium trip request, the app will navigate you to the appropriate pickup location. Registration is required in order to access this area.
What if my rider cancels when I am on my way to pick them up?
If you get a rider cancellation when you’re already on your way to the terminals, you will be eligible to receive another trip request within the next 8 minutes. If you do not receive a trip request during this time you will need to return to the waiting lot.
